Dont know what I did wrong last time I cleaned the rifle, because on the weekend I went out shooting and recoil spring and assembly stopped working. The spring is now stuck in the assembly and I cant remove it. I tried to get it unstuck, but I am afraid of making it worse. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

...don't know if we have the same condition, but when i bought mine (not yet shot), the bolt would recycle only so far and jam (of course this was not after having the force of a fired round driving it back but only by hand so it was not stuck very tightly)...working the bolt back and forth i could feel the bolt grating on something...and the bolt cover would not move at all even with the bolt closed...looking at the disassembly tutorial on CGN i inferred that the spring might be misaligned...padding a VERY small screw driver i was able to wedge it into the rear of the bolt cover and it popped forward and yes the spring was not seated in place but had dropped down and was resting on the rear receiver lug...i realigned it and it cycles fine for now but not sure what i will find when i start to fire it this winter...

...all i know is that i'm grateful i'm not facing the entire nazi army as this happens! :)

...can't say it's true for yours, but

...tell us what you find

Thanks nw mb, I'll give that a try, I was just being cautious I dont want a commpressed spring flying at my face, or some where in my small work shop where I'll never find it again.

...well it might! and again, just because it was my problem doesn't mean it's yours! (back peddling here ;) )...can you get the bolt to move forward at all? ...if not then your spring is probably quite compressed ...maybe call in one of those bomb robots? :) (and i'd be leery about using a anything to strike the bolt handle to get it free ...just not enough experience with an SVT ...the removal of the bolt cover still kept my spring in its loaded, incorrect position since it was resting on the rear receiver lug)

I can completely remove the dust shield, the bolt, and the firring pin mechanism, the only thing stuck is the spring in the recoil assembly, (I hope I am describing the parts correctly) I dont know how I managed to get the spring stuck.

Unfortunately I dont know how to upload any photos from my tablet. If I cant pry the spring out I might have to take it in some where to get it fixed.

Big Will: So all or part of the springs/ guides are stuck inside the bolt carrier? One of the springs must be really screwed up to cause that. But the carrier is pretty sturdy- can you not get pliers onto enough to pull it out? I'd forget about not damaging the springs- easy enough to get replacements.

Big Will, I haven't done it in this forum yet. It might even host pics roe us but probably not. The typical way of posting pics at the forums I hang out at is to:
Go to a photo hosting site. I use photobucket (it's free of course...www.photobucket.com there are others too of course). Go there and open an account. Then you can just upload pics to photobucket. You can then access your library or libraries of photos. BTW...it's a pretty good way to save backups of your pics too without eating-up your email account bandwidth.

OK so once you have pics uploaded to photobucket and you go to one of the pics in your library that you want to post in a forum (here) and click on it. You will see several options and one will be to create IMG codes. Click on it and it will automatically copy it. Then go to the forum and paste the IMG codes into the body of a thread post and then when you post or preview the IMG code/post you will see the photos.

Hope that wasn't too confusing and I hope it's all correct.
If not I'm sure there are photobucket tutorials on youtube.
Good luck.

This is the problem that I have.

...thanks for the pic!

...SVT spring assembly has four parts to it...two guides and two springs...as you can see from this pic that i just took there is no way for the length of both of these together to fit inside your bolt handle housing at all...did your SVT not come with these four parts? ...that said, i would guess that without the forward guide, which is contained in that housing that the rear guide, which you see the end of now fully embedded in your housing, either twisted or bent enough to bind, or else that the spring became expanded enough that it has jammed your guide there ...looking inside the spring tube of my rifle's bolt handle housing i find that it is totally smooth inside, so there is no place that the spring or the guide could have hung up on unless it became etched/scored in the absence of the front guide ...i'd guess that something is badly bound/wedged in there ...now i cannot say that your design is the same as mine since i do not know if the same manufacturing applied to all SVT's throughout the years ...wait and see what others say ...but if i had to undo what you have i'd be looking at somehow grasping that rear guide and trying to twist/pull it free ...if that doesn't work, the next step for me would be to drill that rear guide in hopes of getting a small easy-out into it or to drill and tap it, and then buying a new rear guide (which is a solid piece of steel) ...sorry to see this

again thanks for the pic

I was sure that I installed the both guides, and both springs. But it is possible durring install I missed somthing ane did not notice. The last I cleaned the rifle I had the same parts as your svt. When im able to get it apart I'll post another pic of what happened.

Big Will: Normally those parts won't all fit in to the blind hole in the bolt guide but they come pretty close. All it would take is for one spring to collapse and I'll bet it could all be packed in there. And no, no changes to this portion of the rifle during SVT 40 production. If I was you I'd try slamming the hind end down real hard on a big rubber mallet and see if it won't budge that way (by inertia). I hope that there isn't a slight bulge near the front end of the tube on your bolt- probably just an optical illusion on the photo.

The reason the recoil spring was stuck.

I had the same issue, took the bolt out and gave it a good smack with a plastic hammer, recoil springs got launched across the room, should have pointed them at the workbench,HAHA.
One of the springs had a pretty good bend in the middle causing it to jam inside the bolt.
Got is straightened with a lot of bending and twisting, works OK now,put 50 rounds through it last saturday.functioned flawless

I just turned the spring around and switched the springs so the bent spring is in the housing, and put it back together. Havent fired it since its been put back together. But I dont foresee any issues with the spring anytime soon. I hope.
