As I said to imperium in the post below, once you've got your PAL, it's a good idea to start out with a .22 rifle. They're cheap to buy, allow you to hone your skills without worrying about recoil, and are cheap to feed: 500 rounds of .22 are about $20.00 tax included. Later on, you can get your RPAL and get into handguns, again starting with a .22.
