I have a savage .308 with vBull bottom metal that using AICS mags. I guess I'll call Ed to ask about it later, but in the meantime perhaps I can find the answer here.

I noticed from a photo that AW mags are staggered all the way to the top. One thing I dislike about the AICS mag is the center feeding, meaning I cannot top up the mag while it is in the gun. Would an AW mag fit?

The receiver mag cutout and feed ramp has to be cut to work with both.

There is a pretty good thread on it here:

If I was in the market for a custom tactical action, it would be a requirement. The AW mags are lower profile and are longer internally than the standard AICS mags. Morta Mags are a compromise if you don't want to cut the action for AW mags. They don't have that front plate and height falls in between the AICS and AW mags.

G.A. Precision's Templar action is designed to feed both, I think Surgeon offers it as an option too...

I like being able to top it off. Plus, those mags are $100 each!

Thank you for the help, that is much more info than I thought would be available.

The morta mags look interesting. I'm not willing to do any work to the rifle, it took a lot of work to get it how it is... so they seem to be the ticket.

I learned a while back that the precision game is expensive. You seldom get something for nothing. Toping up sounds good but is often very difficult with a large precision scope mounted. The nice thing about a good mag system is that you can do both with ease if that is what you want. But, if you mag system is flawed, it makes it difficult to load and unload. $100 is nothing in the grand scheme of things in precision shooting....

Agreed. The important thing to me is that the rifle is accurate, tough, and reliable. I have all of that so far. I'm working on ironing out the little personal details now, and it's a minor issue. However, if there's something better out there as far as mags go, I will go that way.

The main attraction of AW mags is the lower profile, more compact design. A 10 rd. AW mag is the size of the 5 rd. AICS mag, and the internal length is longer than the AI AICS mag. But, other companies do make AICS mags without the front plate.
