Can anyone confirm that the AICS 300 WinMag magazine will work (or is the correct size) for 6.5x55 Swede?

Thanks!

Not likely, but it might. The .300 case is a .455" longer. And the OAL is about 3/10" longer. The 6.5 will fit, but I suspect there'd be feeding issues. Follower will be different too. Belted magnum vs non-belted case.

That's better Sunray! At least you're trying to provide answers with some substance now. Way to go buddy! Yeah!

I built a .284 on a long action 700 and am using the same mag. The .284 cartridge, being a larger diameter than the Swede, works fairly well in that magazine but any smaller and you would have problems. The feed lips would have to be tweaked a little to keep the cartridge a bit lower. As it is, the rim of that .284 just barely catches the rear of the mag.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it, just know that it'll require a little hand work, that's all.

Thank you.

Would you be able to elaborate on the required tweaking of the mag? I just want to know if it is something I should tackle or if I should seek help. I really don't want to mangle an AICS mag given their price (after I source some, of course).

I wonder if I would be able to swap out the follower if indeed there were issues?

Well, I suppose the first step is to source one and buy it; then let the tweaking begin!

I would post this in the Gunsmithing forum first - those guys over there will be able to recommend a smithy (which is what I would advise for this).

The issue won't be the width between the feed lips, it will be the height at which those lips hold the cartridge so that it doesn't run out the back of the mag. In order to do this, those lips need to be formed down a bit and as a result of doing that, the width between them gets narrower. Then you'll have to trim some material off the lips to allow the bolt / head to pass through. And unless you retain the same (or slightly larger) radius on those feed lips, you'll end up scoring your cases each time you run them through.

THEN, after you have this sorted out, you'll need to ensure that the whole assembly is at the right height (most likely have to deepen the bottom metal inletting on your stock) so that the bolt will actually catch the cartridge rim in order to push it out to chamber it. So yeah, take it to a smithy who knows these things. It's possible to do it yourself if you're a handy guy with a lot of patience (it tests it!) and the right tools.

On a more positive note, you won't have to do anything with the follower - it's flat (or at least mine is). One other possibility is to weld a small height extension to the rear of the mag that won't interfere with the bolt or any other function. It's a dicy proposition for anyone but a good craftsman, though.

If I'm way out of line on any of this, somebody please correct me or suggest something else. And my apologies if I am really out to lunch. When I get home Tuesday night, I'll run some Swede case into my mag & see what I come up with for you.

In the meantime, get this query into the gunsmithing section. Hope it helps.

Thank you very much for your help. I will take your advice and post in the gunsmthing forum.

Oh, also, where did you get your mag(s)?
