I was shooting my savage model 10 in a MDT tac21 chassis and the last round in my AICS 10 mags is pushing down into the mag (bullet end straight down) instead of feeding into the chamber. I have a fewest and this seems to be a issue with all of them
Anyone had this happen to them?

All feed fine except the last one?

Sounds like the follower is tipping forward, have u ever disassembled the mags? Any chance the springs were installed backwards?

Might need to modify the spring a bit to put more pressure on the front of the follower.

I have never had the mags apart
Yes the last one or sometimes the second last one will do a nose dive into the mag
I was wondering about putting more pressure on the front of the follower

Which brand of mags? Theres a lot of AICS pattern mag manufacturers besides AI themselves. I had a similar issue with MDT .223 AI mags. They don't use any sort of anti-tilt skirting on the follower and this was the result. Click when it should have gone bang while doing short range speed drills is a sure way to lose faith in a product. I never persued much of a fix, cycling the bolt aggressively usually popped the jammed round up in the mag. They wouldn't insert on a closed bolt and I had to really jam the 10th rd in there.

Feed lips probably aren't the problem, sounds like the rounds are hanging up inside the mag. You say they point straight down, does that happen when the bolt is drawn to the rear or when you try to chamber the offending round? Is the bolt pushing it down or is it getting that way before the bolt is pushing on it?

RN Chris,
I am having the same problem as you using MDT's poly .223 mag in my Model 10 mounted in a LSS Chassis..
Actually only the first 3, 4 rds out of 10 will feed before they nose dive..

I am handloading Hornady 75gr. Amax's @ 2.53" OAL..
Loaded them shorter just to see wtf..
Same deal, nose dive..
The DBM is suppose to handle 2.55" OAL IIRC..

Also loaded Hornady 75gr. BTHP's to 2.38" OAL, same nose diving but if I operate the bolt slowly with a pause after the rear end of the case clears the mag lips then it works ok..
Big deal! (grrr)

I carefully filed the feed lips as far as I dare to go on one mag., no love, no improvement..

I have to wonder if the Savage action MDT mag. interface is the problem..

Just buy Accurate Mags (Cadex) and live happily ever after. They are a sweet mag compared to MDT by a long measure. Both .223 and .308 versions feed perfectly with zero issues for me.

These are AI mags! Are they not supposed to be the best?
I also load 75g BTHP, 60g v-max, even the factory loads do this

So no luck filing?

I'll have to take a real close look at what's going on and try and figure this out!

Thanks

I have the same issue, MDT 10 rounder short action ( 308 Win.) the round points into the bottom of feeding ramp. The magazine has 3 problems. One, it wobbles a little bit to front and back, you can feel it at the bottom of the mag, if you shim the lower rear of the mag, it will firm up push the bottom a little forward hence improving the feeding angle and solving most of the problem but it is a Mickey Mouse solution, the real problem is angling of the whole top part of magazine. The second problem is the spring works well with up to 6 rounds in it and then it loses the pressure to push the rounds upwards. The last problem, it allows only for rounds up to 2.820", so it you reload your ammo for your typical 700 with deep chamber and need your round to be let say 2.840", you're out of luck. I had to file the front inner wall of my magazine to make my ammo work. I compared the functionality of this MDT mag and the newest AICS Magpul 10 rounder and concluded the MDT is a junk I would not buy again.

I had MDT plastic 308 mags and they work without any problems but I sold them not a fan of plastic mags and replaced them with metal MDT mags (accurate mag) and metal ruger mags they work flawless too.
Few days ago I got MDT metal 223 mags (same size as 308 with plastic insert) and that when I have noticed nose dive if round was a bit longer, I was unloading mag by hand and it was pushing round below to the front and making it nose dive. When I shortened the OAL that stop happening I will try to do the same with all 10 rd see what happens.

Ok problem solved !
Everyone who has metal AICS mags if you want to have max OAL you have to file a lip on top ,inside is lots of room but that lip makes rounds nose dive . so just file it a bit and it works great .
