Hello,

I was curious in building my first rifle as I have never done it before, but th idea of having something you made is very appealing. So I really like the look and feel of the Accuracy International's Chassis System for the remington short action. I would like to have in .308 Win. So my question is, what would you do; buy a cheaper 700 action to put in and then get a good quality match grade barrel to put in or would you buy a 700 riffle with a good barrel on it (suggestions?) and use that.

Thanks very much, know you guys are very knowledgeable and some of you may have gone down this road before.

Thanks

Id shoot the crap out of the factory barrel then change it out after... The SPS Tac, Varmints and Police are the same barrelled actions and although its hit and miss with QC, the accuracy can be pretty good out of the factory..

Personally,

I voted drop a factory rifle into the stock.

If I was doing it, I'd get an LTR in either .223 or .308 and drop it into the AICS. You get an outstanding rifle and stock with all the work primarily done for you.

Shoot the bejesus out of the barrel, and then get it rebarreled. The AICS will accomadate any size barrel, to the sise of the remington action - no problem.

I was going to go with the AICS myself with my LTR, but have since gone with adding VBull bottom metal onto my LTR stock. The LTR stock fits me perfectly.

The AICS mags will handle and calibre with a .308 case, and can be modified for .223 with some minor work.

Don't discount using a .243 as well - nice shooting calibre - minimum recoil and very flat trajectory. For this I would choose say an SPS Varmint in .243 and use the rifle till it needed to be rebarreled - at which point use a nice custom barrel.

Hope this helps.

Incidently, here's some photos of an LTR in an AICS 1.5:

The Remington action is the basis for the most-used sniper systems in the world. It is a superb action for which there are no end of accessories.

As I said the fellow looking at a TRG in 308, for the money a 700+AICS+Match barrel (I would receommend a McPhee 30 cal) would be 2 grand and would out-perform any factory rifle out there.

I want a AICS 2.0 for my LTR the AICS is a love it or hate it stock, after using a AI for awhile I love it! Wish I still had it here...lol

I bought a Remington 700 police .308 heavy barrel long ago ... put it in a 2.0 AICS stock and love it ... shot it lots ... not tons ... was thinking of getting a McPhee barrel installed sometime in the future ... may or may not shoot the barrel out ... :? Do yourself a favour and buy a 700 and put it in and shoot it ... you will definately have fun ... especially if you're learning how to reload at the same time ... :D

If you have a 700 rifle with a heavy barrel....and it's still shooting good....I'd just drop it straight into the AICS. No bedding is required and it's a real easy swtich.

Depending on which variant of AICS you go with you'll have to budget for at least 2500+ if you decide to go with a match barrel. Here's mine:

If your looking for a great rifle for the money you will invest I would highly recommend looking into the option posted here by Obtunded.

- A good gunsmith can true up a Rem action in a heart beat
- Many easily obtainable accessories for the Rem 700 action
- Now for the barrel - One of the most important parts of your rifle, like it or not. There is no comparison between a high end barrel like a McPhee, Kreiger, Rock Creek, etc and a factory pipe. Comparing a factory barrel to one of these is way beyond apples to oranges. For the money you will spend, this is one place to spend it. Get a quality barrel and get the work done by a highly regarded compitent gunsmith. There are several who frequent this site. Rick at Alberta Tactical, Dennis Sorrenson, Mick McPhee are a few off the top of my head.

Pick your parts, have assembled, shoot and enjoy a super accurate rifle.

I bought a Rem 700 SPS in 300 WM as my action donor. However, I got it used on the EE and before the dollar plung. Now it seems that everyone selling their two or three year old SPS's are asking the old price they paid new . Can't blame them though.

Could anyone suggest a good candidate for supplying the action and barrel to the AICS? SPS, tactical, varmint etc?

Any heavy barreled 700 will do....and they're all just about as accurate as one another so take your pick. Mine has the 700 action and barrel from the XCR tactical rifle. The barrel and action have Remington's TriNyte finish which is a really nice touch compared to Remington's other finishes. However, the price of the XCR tactical is just plain stupid now so I'd look at another model like the SPS tactical, 700P or something similar to that.

If your going to have a gunsmith build you a gun based off your remington 700 action you can do the following:

- Buy a new Rem 700 (long or short action depending on what caliber you want built). Have the gunsmith strip it down for parts. You can use the action and trigger in your build. The gunsmith will then take the action and blueprint it. You would purchase your high end barrel and the smith would chamber it up for your action. Add AICS stock and you've got your rifle minus optics.

- Option 2 is the same as above but instead of buying a new rifle, you could hunt down a used Rem 700.

Wolverine Supplies is the Accuracy International Dealer. Contact them for stock pricing and availability.

are all 700 actions created equal? that is to say are the actions/bolts as good as another after they have been trued? are the tolerances just as tight in a cheapy, and do they save the good ones for the 700p models?

As far as I know, and from what I've been told or could research, all 700 actions are the same. Other than the choice of SS. However, being a mass produced action some are better than others... The Friday afternoon syndrom.

a 700 action is a 700 action. Some are "finished" nicer with faux-jeweled bolts, but they are all the same functionally. Some benefit greatly from accurization, some are pretty darned true from the factory. Whether you buy a Sendero or an SPS, the action is the same.

You can purchase a Pacific Tool & Gauge after market 700 bolt, and if you have it built to fit your action, for $200 CDN, you convert your 700 action into an action as good as any custom.

The one modification that makes the single greatest difference to accuracy, is the addition of a proper match-grade barrel. An SPS with a match barrel will out-perform 90% of the Sendero's out there.
