I never had any formal training in handguns other than years ago in sport pistol 22lr. That is one-handed and all classic stuff. Now since I got 45ACP and started shooting it - I got an article suggesting aiming should be with both eyes open and focused on a target. I tried it today and it works surprisingly well. I have open sights ( no red dot). I wonder what kind of technique you guys use for IDPA or IPSC competitions? I also tried "point-shoot" technique but apparently it will not work with 1911, or at all. Anybody tried that too? If you never heard about it - its when index finger aligned with barrel and middle finger becomes trigger finger. And shooter supposed to point his finger and pull the trigger. Kind of good on paper but ugly in reality. Or sould I practice a little more? What is practical for real situations or competitions?

Shooting with both eyes open is the only way to shoot IMHO.
You get a much clearer sight picture, no eye fatique, don't lose your depth perception but most importantly..you don't lose half your field of view. Very important in a SHTF scenario.
I've tried point shooting and like you..it wasn't pretty. But like all things gun..practice,practice,practice..

"...will not work with 1911..." It does, but it takes as much practice as bullseye shooting. You point the pistol, not your finger. Eyes on the target and shoot instinctively. Don't be using the wrong finger on your trigger though.
