Aimpoint on a hunting rifle

i used an aimpoint micro on my BLR. It worked very well as a quick point and shoot. If you are looking for a scout/short range setup it is a great option. I use the gun for still hunting and shots out to 100 yards max. I got bored one afternoon and put the open sight back on. I'm sure one afternoon I will get bored again and put the aimpoint back on.

I have one on my 500 Jeffery for two reasons. Quick pointing and to keep from getting scoped. I'd say it's good to 100 yards on big game.

Aimpoint Micro H1 on a Tikka T3 - there isn't a better optic for close range "big woods" hunting. Target acquisition is nearly instantaneous and the 2 MOA dot means I would have full confidence in shooting well over 100 meters with a solid rest. Battery life is measured in years and the Micros have been proven to be super tough. I have had mine for four seasons (use it on my wild turkey shotgun) with zero issues.

I woyld be mounting it on a Tikka Battue, I agree there's no faster optic to get on target my only concern would be that there are a cpl places where I could have a 200 yard shot

I've used a Micro H1 on my Marlin SBL and Steyr Scout for some hunting. Not ideal for coyotes or smaller targets, but for deer or any larger game it is very effective out to at least 200 yards or more in daylight. But in low light these sights are even worse than open sights; no magnification, no "light-gathering" effect, just a little red dot on blackness. Not great on the .45-70 at close range, and even poorer on the .308 at the longer ranges the gun is capable of shooting.

I like them on QD mounts to have as a back-up that will literally fit into your pocket, but I doubt I'll ever use them as a primary general-purpose hunting sight again.

I picked up a Primary Arms red dot late last year and plan on using it on one of my close range hunting rifles this fall for deer. I think it will be great for the close range bush hunting and I should be able to stretch it out to 150-200 yards with proper setup. It has a really nice 2 moa dot and you can adjust the brightness for the light conditions.
I think it will work just fine on a hunting rifle.

I put an Aimpoint T-1 with 2MOA dot on a hunting rig ... about 7.5 lbs all in. Did fairly extensive testing during which I shot one 5 shot group at 100M and one 5 shot group ar 300M on 15 different outings...so 15 groups at each distance. 100M agg = 1.25"
300M agg. = 6"

Hey mike..... as you know, I have a holosun on my scout...... but an aim point is also a solid decision.....

A guy at camp has one on a browning bar in .300 win mag..... have shot the rifle and can attest to how well it works....

Hey Brad, I have decided if I go this route it will be a Aimpoint micro for sure

I have close to 30 years experience hunting with Red Dots.... when the woods is thick, (like it is here in N.S.), and the action is fast and close, (0-100 yrd),.. there is no better sight to have on your rifle. I have takin and made longer shoots with them,.. the longest was 150-160yrd to break the neck on a nice 8 point that was standing in chest high huck bushes with everything coverd but his neck.. not my preferred shot at that distance off hand, but it was the only shot I had,.. plus I had taken many off hand 100yrd shots on targets at the range and was pretty confident in what I was doing.
Yes I use variable power scopes when laying in a tree stand over bait at dawn and dusk,.. or if I'm over looking a big cutting or power line,.. but when I am on my feet sneaking through the woods hunting for deer I always have a Red Dot in my hands. Not sure what your intended use is,.. but if it is like my type of hunting I think you will love a good Red Dot on your rifle.

For the past few years I have been using a 284win BLR 81 as my Red Dot rifle...

This poor fella suffered a broken neck while trying to sneak through a thick bunch of Maple and Fir I was hunting in one evening just before dark...

This was the first deer my son ever saw shot... 9:30am on Remembrance Day while we were sneaking through a stand of pole Spruce and Fir... best hunting day of my life..

Wasn't trying to talk you out of it...... realize now that my post wasn't written very clearly....

My buddy with the .300 winnmag bar has the aimpoint on it..... nice clear optic and has served him very well..... he has taken a few deer with it and dogged with it and it's always stayed solid.....

My deer hunting will consist of running hounds during the day where shots will be close 25-80 yards and sitting in a stand for a col hours in the morning and stand hunting for. Cpl hours at the end of the day. My concerns are when im sitting I may have a 200 yard shot . I was thinking of mounting a scope as well as a Aimpoint micro on QD mounts and swapping them out between sitting and dogging

Right on mike...I would say QD mounts with scope and red dot would be a good plan...I had planed to do the same thing for my 358win.. scope for sitting in my stand in the morning and evening, and red dot for hunting during the middle of the day.

We will see what happens, I just put one of my rifles up to trade for a Aimpoint micro
