My wife was in P.E.I. as a coach/baby sitter for the Special Olympics Bowling Competition, part of the 2018 Canada Games.
One of the tours they got was this, which she knew I would be interested in, so she took some pictures for me on her cellphone..

Summerside PEI was an RCAF base for many years, part of Maritime Air Command, tasked along with RCAF Greenwood in Nova Scotia with patrolling and protecting Canada's east flank during the cold war era. In the late 50's they were flying Neptunes until 415 (swordfish) Squadron was equipped with the mighty Argus which allowed them to do regular 12-16 hour patrols extending across the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. At various times they also had a satellite flight from 103 Greenwood's Rescue Squadron. The winding down of the cold war and economic factors along with political ideology brought a severe contraction of Canada's armed forces and many military bases including Summerside were closed. The aircraft shown are RCN kites, probably never based at Summerside although they would be a frequent visitor. The Tracker was probably carrier based out of Halifax. Yes Virginia, we had an aircraft carrier then.

Seeing these birds... brings back childhood memories of Comox BC.

Dad was on 409 Squadron then. I still have his "VooDoo Medicine Man" patch, on the wall above my computer.

The Voodoo was armed with a nuclear anti-aircraft missile. Not many citizens knew that we had them. I recall working on them and thinking that they would probably be effective.

I was in Comox in 1962.
