Air Guns for Hunting

In the US they are using these air rifles for 400 plus yard gopher kills. Very impressive to say the least. Bison, deer, the new fad in hunting.

Some suppliers in Canada selling these types for a few years now, just all under the radar of the masses, so no one was talking about them.

There is typically someone selling these big bore air rifles at the Brandon gun show, but we need Manitoba hunting laws to catch up with the technology for them to be useful here.

That was the Quackenbush .457 pre-charged rifle showing the potential of a 510 gr cast boolit on a hefty critter. It don't take a ####load of velocity to do
the job with a well placed heavy lead projectile at sensible range. ;)

Folks wanting more oomph can go the 12 bore route as well.

Rewatched the video. It was the hammer 50 cal

I've got a Crossman 1322 pistol that's a riot for hunting rabbits. Takes a close stalk and a full 10 pumps to take them down but a hunting-grade .22 calibre pellet at near 500fps will do the trick at 10 yards. Lots of upgrades available as well, I've heard of folks getting 600+fps out of them with "replacement parts".

I don't think I'd hunt big game with one but in light of primer shortages and for plinking in the garage it's been really fun. Also fun in the woods with a rimfire spinning target. It's certainly accurate enough to hit those little 2.5" plates at 15-20 yards and make a nice "tonk" sound.

There is a video on YouTube where I believe it was a .50 cal. airgun they were using in Africa for taking game from a blind by a watering hole. Quite impressive for an airgun I must say. Here in Manitoba they are only allowed for upland birds or pests.

I've watched Steve Scott on Safari Hunter's Journal use an Umarex air gun to take many African animals. Surprisingly good performance. Not sure that it's particularly interesting to me from a practical standpoint, but maybe if you were hunting near built up areas it could fill a need.
