Air pistol for hunting suggestions

Until I tried the CCI CB long ammo I was hard core to use a 1322 as my extra carry rifle/pistol while hunting to bag partridge. When I found this ammo then bought a Savage Rascal it was/is a match made in quiet shooter's heaven.

Here's a pic of the ammo.

The HW45 in 22 is anywhere between 480-500 fps with a heavier round headed hunting pellet like JSB exact.

Well I don't have a chrono handy to test the fps yet, but from what I have read, no one gets those kind of numbers with heavy pellets. Or even the light rws hobby's.

Mine sure doesnt but its still a hard hitter for a spring powered pistol.

The Crosman 2240 out of the box shoots in the 420 to 450 fps range in my experiance. (yes I own a Crony) If you are close to grouse and make a head or neck shot it will do the job. Personally I would not try it on anything bigger.

They are a good value for the dollar and can be modified to shoot very near 500 fps with the original barrel. The extra 40 to 60 fps make a big improvement for a game shooter.

I am not a fan of 177 pistols for hunting.

My 2240 has been modified into an excellent grouse gun. Custom barrel, barrel shroud, sights, valve mods, and trigger mods. It shoots 480 to 490 fps consitantly with 25 cal pellets.

webley alecto.
its easy close the relief valve, giving you the full 500fps in 22. (i have an alecto 22 and crony).

if you don't want to spend that kinda money, crosman 22 pumpers are good.
same platform;
1322 has pistol grips and a 10" barrel
2289 has pistol grips and a shoulder stock (easy to swap back and forth), and either a 12" barrel with non-detuned valve, or a 14" barrel with a detuned valve. (ones in canadian tire or scopesandammo for sale today are 12", non-detuned).

scopesandammo has various barrel sizes available to get a bit more UMPH, should you desire. i would suggest getting a replacement breech screw if you are going to go that route, for ease of dismantlement.

(1322 barrel band and front sight needs replaced if going with longer barrel, and frame needs spring and pin if you want to put the stock on, if you might do either of these things, just start with 2289 instead)

Wish we here in Quebec could hunt with a pellet pistol but the minimum velocity for airgun hunting is 500fps and thats legally a firearm so a no go unfortunately.

they are all legally a firearm, but airguns that dont pass both muzzle velocity, and energy thresholds are exempt from firearms act.

7.3gr @ 501fps does not surpass the energy threshold, and is therefore exempt from firearms act.

and even if you want to use .22, 500fps is not "greater than 500fps" (the terminology from FA), and satisfies your 500fps quebec minimum.

I have shot grouse with a ctire air rifle and done just fine with bb and with pellets. I would love a 22 cal semi auto for rats and such if anyone knows where to get one?

I have a 2240. It was a Walmart special at $50. The only mod I did to it was lighten the trigger pull. Last season I shot a Snowshoe Hare in the back from around 15 yards (45 feet). It broke the spine, passed through one of it's lungs and exited the chest. Definitely enough power for rabbits and other similar small game but I don't think I'd try it on anything bigger.

My only complaint is that the power drops off in the winter and it's kinda slow to reload with gloves on. I'm seriously eyeing an HW45 but they're so expensive.

I've put down large birds with the webley alecto in .22, including a couple of crows - valve mod it and your good to 25 yards for having them fall on the spot on your point of aim. Practice with it first. I've had 2 and I miss em both!
