Am considering a replacement air pistol for indoor practice - cost is not too important:new or secondhand.[ My Webley Hurricane is getting weak and I have no idea where to get it repaired/refitted. ]

Would like something in either 177 or 22 cal and preferably exceeding 700 fps. I have a restricted licence...

Any advice from experienced airgun users would be very welcome.

Hurricane's are nice pistols, I have a Tempest. Don't have too much to suggest, other than a link to a site that'll have lots of suggestions sub-500fps.

If I could add a question~just curious as to why you're looking for so much punch in a pistol for indoor use? If it is restricted, it can only be used at a proper/approved range. (and I'm assuming yours is) In which case...I'd personally be more interested in a .22lr. If it's for basement use, I would think anything sub 500 would suffice, probably be less expensive, easier to operate, etc. (thinking PCP pistols and everything req. to make them tick) Not trying to talk you out of anything, just don't see that question asked often.
 
There are and were, very few air pistols that could give you 700 fps with anything resembling useable results.

Drop that as a requirement, and your world gets larger in a hurry.

Otherwise, expect to have to shop long distance, and spend considerable money upon the purchase. You are pretty much in the realm of very high priced PCP's made in England.

Don't expect to find them in stock anywhere, either.

Look at the target type pistols, if that is your thing. Feinwerkbau, Pardini, Izmash, etc.

If you want something that looks and feels like a firearm, you are mostly stuck looking at low-grade plastic and pot-metal toys.

Waddya think you were gonna do with 700 fps inna air pistol anyways?

If you thought that was what you were getting out of your Webley, you need to run it over a chrony.

I've never seen a pistol >500fps in Canada. It's not worth it for the retailer due to the low volume and hassle of dealing with 'restricted '. There are a couple available in the US, but good luck getting it into Canada. If it's over 500fps, it would not be legal to shoot it in your house; needs to be a range and all of the related regs around restricted guns.

They don't get much past 500fps anyway; maybe into the low 600s for 22. (lots of Youtubes on these).

Much, much easier to get a sub-500. There are several good quality single shot and repeaters available. I can't recommend one over the other. I have several and enjoy them all.

Thanks for the input guys; To answer some of your basic queries, I want something that actually recoils when I shoot, otherwise I tend, because of personal sloth, to adopt a very floppy grip per the Hurricane: although the trigger is nice.

Based on your consensus as expressed here, I guess that I will try to find someone to fix my Webley [ close to 415 fps at last count] and grind away in the basement. When it is not too cold I will use my 22 LR auto at the outdoor range....then to IPSC using rounds that actually count !

J+G airgun in the USA as well as Chambers in the UK.Both ship to Canada. J+G had the new mainsprings and seals.This may not be a do it yourself project as these guns are fun to take apart.I think they were about 450fps new in .177.........Harold
 
There is only ONE air pistol that actually looks like a real .22 target pistol by design - the FAS604. It was designed so that those who had the .22 and .32 [like me] could carry on shooting at home or in the backyard with a gun that felt just like all the others in grip and balance, although, necessarily, not in weight.

I've had mine since 1986, and use it virtually every other day.

GAMO make an ungainly [IMO] item that looks pretty much the same, but is a lot bigger.

Your requirement to have a recoiling air pistol means that combining with the 700>fps will give you REAL problems.

I've just called them up to ask if they have ever made one over 6ft lbs - the legal limit here in and in the rest of Europe. The boss there was very helpful - he can't make a +6 ft lb version, as he would need to have a manufacturer's firearms licence to do so, but he could ship one to a location of your choice so that YOU could get it upped to the level you say you need.

However, it will probably not recoil.

...and it might end up costing you north of $1000.

Mopp, all you need is air gun oil. Let it sit a bit before trying. You might also replace the "rubber" grommet(what the barrel closes against), these can be had at any hardware store including Canadian Tire(plumbing section, use a knife if you have to to make it fit tight).

There are drop in spring kits that will bring your Hurricane up to speed so to speak available on the net. Not something someone without experience should try to install without a huge knowledge of the trigger springs. 1000 times easier to rip apart a 1911 than a Webley air pistol.
 
Why not get a blowback airsoft gun?

In the basement it'll be just as fun and accurate as most other pistols.
shoots +400fps.
