I was thinking about getting an air pistol to put in a toolbox in my snowmobile in a survival kit for small game. I'm thinking it would be best too go with a spring powered gun rather than depending on having CO2 canisters on hand. Any reccomendations?

Thanks!

CO2 doesn't perform well in cold weather, regardless of how many cylinders you have on hand.

You'll find single or multi-stroke pnuematics easier to shoot than spring powered pistols. Look at the Webley Alecto .22 or Crosman 1322. If going with the Crosman, consider a flat-top piston and valve kit, to get the fps closer to the limit, and some trigger work.

My 1322 just came in the mail today, and I also have a Beeman P17 on the way.

The 1322 is multi-pump, in .22
The P17 is single-pump in .177

I ordered the Beeman because it was also very highly rated (match-quality trigger), and the pellets are less expensive. I will be using them mostly for target practice in my basement, but for survival scenarios, I think the 1322 would be best. Combine the lower FPS of a pistol with a larger pellet (hollow point) and you get a fair pistol for small game. The way you load it is also much easier (bolt action) compared to the Beeman.

Nice to see the 1322 is still around.

My older brother owned one in the 80s and I used it a couple times to dissuade cats from nestling under our Juniper bushes and waking me up at 3 AM when the females are in heat !!!

Looks like I'll have to get me one now !!!

They also have a 1377 which is the same but with brown furniture and .177 cal. I prefer the 22, and in all black. All-Black Tacticool .22 Multi-Pump. :dancingbanana:

I've got a webley tempest in 177 shoots straighter than I do, bought it for grouse easy enough to pack but I got a Hammond game getter that's awesome, webley if for fun now

P17 is a nice gun ( accurate, nice trigger ) BUT PITA to load, you could pump 9 times and load, faster on a 1322. Then you be able to open, try and put a pellet on a P17 and 25# to close it.

I had a 1322, 2240, Then a .177 Browning Buckmark URX ( crappy trigger )

1322 would get my vote. 22 packs a punch. 1377 going for under 80$ at most CT if you want .177.

I've been using a Crossman 1322 here in Yellowknife, it works well in the cold as long as I keep it in my jacket. Not sure if the seals would work if I let the cold soak into it at -35 though. Kills Ptarmigan nicely at up to around 20m with the big 22 pellets.

Anoter vote for the 1322 or even 1377, heck a 2289 if you have room for the longer barrel. Get yourself the removable stock for the 13xx and you have a nice little carbine.

Call me cheap, but the Webley's are not in the "toss in the sled/ATV" price range. They are beautiful guns though.

The P17 is a great gun, shoots around 400fps, has a nice trigger. I love it for indoor target shooting, tied for 3rd place at my first and only Field Target Pistol Match with it, up against guns that cost 10x the price of the P17.

Another vote here for the 1322. I regularly take mine hunting when I pack my shotgun for up close grouse or rabbits. Best take with it so far is a snowshoe hare facing away from me at about 15 yards. Spine shot, through the left lung and just about exited the chest. Definitely is accurate enough and has plenty of power for small game hunting. Mine is factory (except for a trigger job which does not affect velocity) and with 12 pumps I get 470 fps with a 14 grain pellet.

Also, perfectly legal for hunting in NB.

Limited out on spruce grouse today with the 1322 at about -14, pellets make a big difference. Crosman hollow point pellets don't seem to work but Predator Polymag pellets are lethal on grouse and ptarmigan inside of 20m.

Webley Alecto in .22 (multi-pump). Not cheap or small but works great (I know...).

Agree 100 % ,I have one ,very accurate and great grips.I mounted a red dot on mine....perfect shot every time and great power. There`s a youtube vid on how to "tweek" it for more "juice" ,although I have not bothered.

3 pumps and she`s ready for action.
