Air Rifle for Coyotes

Please explain both the cost and the work involved, also which caliber and model do they use to kill deer and hogs. As in my first post I mentioned I knew nothing of air rifles or if such a thing existed so I am looking for specifics here if they do not just generalities
The amount of money I've sunk into my 9mm Condor, I could've gotten an Evanix Rainstorm. On the other hand, I can swap out the innards and put my .22 or .25 barrel back in, but I have a 2nd Condor frame to swap between .22 and .25.
Cost of Condor - $750
9mm swap - $425
Keeping in mind that the 9mm conversion is custom made. Like randyhub said, our buddy took down a coyote with a .25. I would have to agree with kodiakjack about using a bow or crossbow, because the Condors are pretty loud.

id go for the old cooey with some standard velocity ammo(bulk pack works well) that shoots well in it with that long barrel it does not make that much noise(I have used .22lr on yotes plenty I see them most when im hunting other things) or go buy a crossbow one of the cheaper Chinese ones(not the pistol sized ones with a stock from nc star) will work for coyotes. once air rifles get above 500fps they get louder our US friends get the ability to own the guns with the permanently attached suppressors because they are not classified as firearms there we do not have that option

A crossbow would be whisper quiet, but if one doesn't have one, they are fairly a fairly expensive bit of kit with an optic mounted.

I don't think I would pull out one of my .22 rim fires to dispatch one, especially with subsonic solid lead bullets.

Some have said that magnum PCP air rifles are loud. My Jack Haley .457 is on the loud side, but as it can be charged so it is subsonic, it sounds more like an air powered nail gun from about 50 ft away. It does not sound like a gun going off with a sonic 'crack'. From approx. 50 ft away a .22 rim fire would be more noticeable I think.

Here is a link to short video of one my sons shooting it using a 405 gr hollow point 'pellet'! LOL

I've shot it out to 100 yards and it is very accurate. I don't have any photo/videos of it at the range, but here is a video a guy in the US posted on Youtube comparing the same JH rifle I own to a Theoben .25 air rifle. As you can see it can buck winds well and is very accurate.

Yes the AA in .22 is way to underpowered compared to .25s and up.

Shooting a Coyote with a .22 airgun is just a bad idea period, I have seen the difference between a .22 and a .25 air gun shooting 31 grain pellets at 940 fps it makes a .22 pellet look like a toy.

Slightly off topic, I recently read that Jack Haley has passed.

If you want humane- you will need to consider a big-bore. The Sam Yang .50cal Dragon Claw would be my pick- over 200 ft-lbs muzzle energy and a big slug. The benjamin Rogue would be ok as well. 9mm would be the smallest- anything smaller wouldn't be recommended IMHO. A .22mag has about 300ft-lbs at the muzzle- and many would consider this too light for 'yotes...

Big bores are not quiet compared to a normal airgun- but compared to a .223 they are.

As others have said- make sure local laws allow the use of an airgun for your purposes...

Yes, you are correct. Jack has passed on.

He got very ill and was hospitalized for some time when he was in the midst of building my rifle, which delayed it's completion by 3-4 months. I was in New Orleans on business in 2010, shortly after I'd received my rifle and I got to meet Jack and Reba. He did look very well then. I was great to meet the two of them and get a tour of his small workshop where he built all of his guns by hand.

RIP Jack.

I'd say go crossbow, you can get a cheap one for around 75-100. Although on the airgun part, many people don't know Lewis and Clark brought a 50 cal air rifle across the US, which could kill Buffallo with a single shot. would be pretty cool to have one of those.

Google; " Big Bore Airguns."

Over the many years of my hunting over bait and dogging in the bush,it has been my experience that the deer are not too overly concerned about gunfire. They seem to have extremely short memories.

Numerous times I have taken an additional deer less than 10 or 15 minutes after shooting the first one. They do scatter but seem to come back almost immediately. The deer I just shot is still lying there and they will just eat around him. Same with dogging. They will scatter but not go too far.

The point I am trying to make is this. A coyote hanging around your stand will mess up your hunt worse than just shooting the sum##### right off the hop and being done with it.

A possibility would be what Airrow Air sells: a crossbow bolt driven by a 22 blank. They also make a CO2 harpoon gun.
That said, I have the 10/22 barrel from them. 1.5" at 50m; 420fps with 250gr arrow.
Question to the experienced airgunners: could an arrow shooter be made for a production air rifle?

There is a arrow kit to make Airforces airguns shoot arrows or you can buy the new .45 Airforce Conder pushes a huge slug over 1000 fps!!!

I have some serious doubts about the claims that SMW makes on their site. They claim some pretty bold numbers without any demos, or YouTube videos. Half the YouTube videos I found featured system failures. And then I see an obviously uninformed statement like "Keeping in mind that even the most powerful compound bows and crossbows around, propel their arrows at velocities in the 200-260 fps range, one can now begin to appreciate the absolutely amazing power generated by the new barrel design."

Bull. Show me a video of it grouping 1" at 50 yards. Show me a video of it ethicaly killing a deer. Show ime a video of it pinging the speed trap at 425. Until I see that, this gizmo falls into the same category as the x-Ray glasses advertised in the back of my old MAD magazines.

No offense intended to fellow CGN'r bross, just skeptical about the manufacturer's claims. Especially when they want me to send them $3 for a brochure. Come to think of it, that's what the x-Ray glasses people wanted too...
