I picked up an RWS 4 - 12 x 50I while at the Kittery Trading Post. Its nominally an air rifle scope and I understand the double recoil factor with these guns and why not just any scope is suitable for them.

My son is buying a Ruger Tactical and I don't know enough about this class of scope to suggest it for his rifle. Can anyone help me resolve the question?

I had one. Mine was sh!t. I hope you have better luck with yours.

Springer airguns double-recoil. Blowback rimfires typically dont, its not a concern. While it wont hurt, there is no reason to mount a springer-rated airgun scope on a 10/22.

See if he can find a Bushnell 3-9x32AO with Target Turrets. Mounted in Burris Signature Zee rings, its a superb scope at a sub $120 price point.

Air scopes are built to manage the recoil in a forward motion.
Firearm Rifle scopes are built to manage the recoil in a rearward motion.
A rifle scope on an air rifle will soon be destroyed.
i would think it would be the same with an air rifle scope on a firearm.

Both directions actually. The piston bounces back and forth after it slams forward to compress air. An airgun rated scope on a rifle will be fine. A rifle scope on a Springer airgun will trashed in a matter of time. CO2 and PCP airguns don't have this issue.
