Airbrush recommendation?

Did the search and found a couple of relevant links but going to ask anyways ;)

Redoing the finish on a bubba'd Swedish Mauser. Sandblasted it yesterday at My72Jeeps work garage using a cheapo sandblaster from CTC (was in a damaged box with 2 bottles of aluminum oxide grit - was brand new in a damaged box for $10!). Did a remarkable job, although wasnt a lot of finish left on the barrel and receiver. We tried some ground walnut shell but was too coarse to feed through the blaster.

Using KG Stock Kote and not being familiar with airbrushes, wondering what you folks are using and if possible - links to the product you use.

Looking at some from Princess Auto.

Not looking to do this on a full time basis - only have a few projects to try it on.

I use a paasche talon for my model airplanes...

I guess research if you need a single action or double action to start with.
 
if its thicker finish go with a bigger needle.

id probably use a normal paint gun rather than an airbrush and go for a 1.8mm needle these are called primer guns in the autobody industry and are generally used for polyester high build primer.
I use a "primer" gun for most of my painting needs usually with thinned tractor enamel or rust coat enamel on welding projects nothing that needs to be a show piece for autobody work other than priming I use very expensive paint guns.for a painting newb one word of advice don't stop spraying in the middle of the part it will leave a line that will be visible after it dries.
 
I use a 3m HVLP spray gun with a 1.3mm Nozzle.

KG is ready for spraying. My recommendation is don’t cheap out on the spray equipment. Airbrush may not be the best as it will take a long time to paint the barrel.

I've got a Paasche on ebay for $ 35 iirc ( new $ 125 ) and shoot KG a fair amount.

99% of refinishing is in the prep. Small parts are easy enough to deal with but when you start dealing with bigger items you want to have a plan in advance. Practice manipulating the part a few times to get an idea of how you're going to do it. Does it move better hung from a wire or mounted on a stick. Check the fit of all your parts in the over before. They might not all fit in one session.
Also get a small bottle of Testors or other model paint. Practice on what ever is lying around to get a feel for your new sprayer and when you're ready do your gun. Thin coats and warm in between for a minute or 2.
A cheapo airbrush from CT or PA should do but check ebay or kijiji first.
 
So finished the project for now...

A few years ago I bought a sporterized M38 Swedish Mauser from Tradex. I have an affinity for the 6.5x55 and the older I get, the heavier my hunting gear seems! I wanted to end up with a lightweight "stalking" rifle to take on hikes while deer hunting.

As purchased, this one had the bent bolt, drilled and tapped with weaver mounts and a shortened barrel (I am a carbine guy as well) but with no bluing left on the metal and a stock that needed refinishing. I first tackled the stock, got rid of the metal butt plate and refinished it with a light application of stain (it had nice colour to start with) and several applications of tung oil. I needed to add length to the stock because it was too short and couldnt find anything that fit the stock, so I repurposed and ground a Remington 870 Express recoil pad - wasnt 100% but close. Then the project languished for a couple of years.

Decided I needed to get moving on it a week or so ago and sandblasted it using a cheapo sandblaster from CTC (was in a damaged box with 2 bottles of aluminum oxide grit - was brand new in a damaged box for $10!). Did a remarkable job of stripping the old finish off of the metal, not that there was much left anyways. As this post started, wanted to spray finish it with KG Stock Koat in a matt black. I watched a You Tube video and they used an airbrush to refinish a Remington 870.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to keep my eye out for a Paashe airbrush on Ebay. What I ended up using was an airbrush for models and it worked surprisingly well. Had an attachment to hook to an air compressor which I set at 30 PSI. I degreased and washed all of the metal parts and waded in. Thanks for the suggestion of not stopping the spray in the middle of a part! All in all, I was pleased with the results, a few minor mistakes but you have to look hard to see them. I put everything together today but am going to leave it alone for a few weeks even though everything seems to have set up already.

Not totally happy with the scope setup. I have a Bold trigger with a safety but didnt install it as the bent bolt isnt radiused to clear a lower mounted scope (same height when retracted as the safety) - so I left the military safety and trigger on for now. Need to do more research before I attempt to radius the bolt handle... Also, most of todays scopes have such large power adjustment rings, its going to take a fair amount of metal removal to clear them. I ended up using some high Vortex rings and an older Burris 1.75 - 5x scope on it which is close to the 2 -7x I wanted to mount on it.

Its nice and light and I look forward to putting some shots through it!
 
Nice job.

Best thing about KG is that you don't need to strip it to clean up a blem or imperfection. Just rub some steel wool on the area and re-spray it.
 
very nice. and yes never stop in the middle of a part it will show in the finished product when painting a whole car you walk down the car while spraying the sides anyway ask my dad how many of my f*** ups he had to fix later on but it was his idea to hand 7 year old me the paintgun :p.

Where did you get the KG Stock Kote from? Canadian dealer? I have some parts for my Howa Mini I want to do in FDE.
