Watching a youtube video and came across a neat idea - an airgun firing arrows.... Now legally this opens a bigass can of worms regarding whether or not this would be considered a flechette or arrow (my guess is that it's an arrow as it doesn't fire from inside a barrel), and whether firing an arrow makes it a bow or a firearm (sub 500 fps meaning it's not a firearm, so firing a fletched arrow leans it towards a bow, but not having strings makes it an airgun... but firing an arrow makes it something else... more like a spring bow?)

Anyways, long story short, I think this' quite neat and I see a lot of potential in it.

My guess is pneumatic crossbow...

Kinda neat, but a bit pricey. I'll stick with my Darton for now. I had a sudden flashback to those little darts I used to get for the pellet gun when I was a kid.

Any idea where pneumatic crossbow falls across federal laws or provincial hunting laws? I can always check but I'm not an airgun guy.

I checked it out with MNR (Ont) over 15 yrs ago when I was experimenting with blank launched arrows. Their basic rule was that if it had no string, it wouldn't qualify for archery but would be alright for use in rifle season.

an airgun that cant putsh a big heavy projectile over 500 isnt necessarily exempt. a big heavy projectile at 300 would surpass the energy threshold, and if you load a tiny light projectile in it would go over 500, thus the gun is capable of surpassing both thresholds and is not exempt.

(i have no idea about this particular product, havent watched the vid, dont even know if it has a barrel)

Interesting...

Very true, however that's only if it's designed to be able to fire a smaller projectile. Could design it in such a way that it was incapable of firing anything other than an arrow, and most arrows are far too heavy to accelerate that quickly and survive. Also, fortunately we only have an FPS rule, not an energy rule :D
