Peace everyone,

Looking a for a decent airgun to teach my kid how to shoot. Wondering what yall recommend so I can do some research.

Thanks!

I have a Gamo Varmint, 2 actually. One is the 495fps model and the other is 1250fps. The 495 was not that great, at least for what I needed, I got it for eliminating pigeons where using a powder burner was not an option. The 1250 is pretty decent and was $215. I replaced the scope and got a 1 piece mount from DL Airguns. The trigger is adjustable but still not that great out of the box and required changing the set screw to a longer one which is a very simple process. Once that was done I tested a bunch of different pellets and found a few that worked real well at about 25 yards. I was able to consistently head shot the pigeons and they all flopped dead. I don't have thousands of shots through it so I can't so for sure how good it will be the long term, but It is an inexpensive airgun that doesn't feel cheap, and so far seems to work well.

There are different "youth" models out there. These would be good to start with as they are scaled to fit the smaller body size. Some can also be adjust for pull length as the kid grows. Nothing worse than the gun being too large or heavy for the kid to properly control.

I bought a Gamo Roadster a couple of years ago, nice enough but it’s the 495 powered version for pests in the backyard. It’s fine for kids. Comes with sights and a usable scope. They go on sale often so you can get them for under $300.

Too bad they don't make the regular Daisy 935 anymore. Its a good youth gun, and with a stock spacer system they can use as they grow. Plus can upgrade to target sights.

A quality gun for life would have been the HW30 in .177
I agree whole heartily with this... HW30 is a fairly small fantastic rifle about 65 0 f/s.

I owned one for over 30 years and only sold it as I moved up to a high quality PCP rifle.

Picked up a diasy youth for 70 bucks at canadain tire! Thanks yall!

Great choice, 6000 bb's for $15 too! You can tune down the trigger spring by swapping the return spring into the trigger position and cutting down a 'pen spring' to use as the return... my daughter is 8 and had to use 2 fingers to pull the trigger, now no problem.
