A friend has just told me that airgun scopes are built to a higher shock tolerance than regular centerfire rifle scopes. Is this true? Can I put a scope meant for an airgun on my Mini-14 without wrecking it?

For the last 7 or 8 years, I have had a $50 Bushnell Sportsman Airgun scope (I've since re-adjusted the Parallax to 100 yards) that has survived just fine on 3 or 4 different centerfires (308 Win's and 303 Britishes), as well as on a high powered springer air rifle. Glass is nothing to brag about, but you can see through it well enough to squeeze one off, and it holds zero just fine. I've also owned several others just like it -- never a problem with any of them.

YMMV.

I think the thing is with Air Rifle scopes is that they take take the reverse recoil of the spring in the Air rifle.

I heard and again only heard that Leupold used to say all their scopes would stand up to Air rifles but now they dont back this statement.

So if the above is true there is obviuosly something different about an air rifle scope. I know I've tried some Bushnell rifle scopes on my X bow and they dont last long.

Not saying an Air rifle scopes is better but possibly not made the same.

If you seriously think a 43$ air rifle scope can handle the recoil of a centrefire rifle you must be smoking some good shette.

Actually, the Bushnell 3-9x32AO with target turrets will handle .223 and .308 just fine. All of mine have. Granted, its an $80-100 dollar airgun scope.

Doesn't it depend upon the type of air gun you are using it on? Not all air guns are springers, with the reverse-recoil thing. Some have virtually no recoil.

Here you go $2600 USD

Schmidt & Bender Field Target Air Rifle

The Schmidt & Bender 12.5-50x56 scope is designed specifically for the precision requirements of Field Target airgun shooters. The new scope features parallax adjustment from 7 to 70m, tailored for the demands of Field Target competition.

This popular sport simulates an actual hunting environment, while requiring extremely accurate range and windage calculations due to the arcing trajectory of airgun pellets.

We reported that this design could readily be adapted for long-range use, and we’ve been proven correct. Strong enough to handle any centerfire cartridge up to 50 BMG according to Schmidt & Bender.
