Airline flights and trace from discharging firearms

California still allows ranges? :yingyang:

LOL!

I don't know 100%, but I think Cali the is most gun unfriendly state when it comes to rules. It's as quirky as us. I don't know exactly but in order for them to own an AR, they have to do it a certain way b/c of a loop hole, as for us, we just go buy AR. Too bad, they can take their AR out anywhere they want, no ATT, and across borders. However, their rules are something us Canadians would substitute any time!

in Moncton after the nationals, they swabbed my suitcase with my ammunition and gun gear in it. when i asked them what would happen if they got a positive since i had already told them there was ammo in there they didn't have a clue. however it came up negative.

They don't swab for propellant, they swab for explosives (thats from the screener guy I asked). Half the time I go through security they wind up dumping out empty casings from my carry on, they swab, never had a 'positive'.

High-heat explosives, and gun propellant, are NOT the same thing. That's the point I was making.

No, they often contain the same compounds.
"High Heat" explosive?

Dynamite: nitroglycerin absorbed into keiselguhr, perhaps with some ammonium nitrate depending on type.
Blasting gelatin: nitroglycerin nitrocellulose mixture

Single based smokeless powder: nitrocellulose
double based smokeless powder: nitroglycerin + nitrocellulose
triple based smokeless powder: nitroglycerin +nitrocellulose+ nitroguanidine
All with minor components like diphenylamine stabilizers.

Contrary to popular belief, the propellant powders can detonate under the right booster and confinement conditions.

Detection is based on functional groups in molecules, the ONO2 (organic nitrate) being present in both nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose. I think it is a GCMS detection system.

I think their systems just are not all that great, I have not had a positive hit even after I flew a few weeks after getting a tour of an explosives factory. I enjoy firearms and I used to do explosives research, never once getting a positive hit.

I was travelling in uniform once and they got all pissy about the traces...I kinda lost it on them. Really, some security guard that can barely speak english, cannot recognize the uniform when he sees it, and has no peace officer status giving me a hard time...laughable...

What uniform? Maybe payback.....

Case in Point: I brought my oversized rifle case to the screening area prior to my flight back, they asked for me to PROVE it safe (it already was, of course).

This, after I had been playing around with the rifle (test-fired at the factory and NOT cleaned), plus manipulating rounds of ammo in my hotel room (not at the same time of course).

Actually, in your first post you weren't making ANY point. You were just telling a new CGNer that he is gullible. By the way, did you know that the word "Gullible" is not even IN any hard copy standard dictionary?

If they want a pistol grip on the AR, the magazine (10 rounds) has to be permanently installed on the gun, and they have to pop the back pin and load the mag from the top for every reload.

If they want a detachable mag, they need to have one of those weird ass stocks that does not provide a pistol grip.

When I'm flying I normally pack my Pyro license with me. I figure that should help in explaining any residue they may find. I haven't had to use it yet.

went to vegas a did a lot of shooting the same day as my flight back, didnt shower or change clothes or anything and had no problems

That is one fugly lookin gun.

Is this even a serious question?

If you even remotely questioned the factuality of that, you're incredibly gullible, my friend. ;)

great job providing useful information.
Top notch contribution to the thread...

on a completely unrelated note - my mother recently received a dose of radiation (treatment), and was asked if she would be travelling to the States in the next month.
when she said no, but asked why - they said that due to the radiation in her, that border patrol would know she was coming before she even hit the bridge.
they have a form you have to fill out and provide at the border - when the stop you - that says you recently had radiation.

at first this seemed scary to me, but then when you think about it, it's a good thing. if that trace amount of radiation can set off warning bells from so far away - I'm assuming a 'dirty bomb' or nuclear device would be sure to get some attention.
food for thought

carry on.

Shooting and flying

One of my most favorite things to do is shoot full auto in Vegas. I spend more time on the range there then in the casino or with my girlfriend! I have gone shooting there just a few hours before getting on a plane and I have never had a problem. I have done this maybe 10 times in the past 3 years, so my answer is no, I don't think it will be an issue. Even if it is, just tell the truth, it's not like you have anything to hide.

I've had American customs find empty brass in my carry-on.

Just when I thought I'd be going to some small room somewhere and miss my flight the agent says "No problem. They're empty." and throws them back into the bag!:dancingbanana:
