i'm not sure if this is the proper forum, but its as close as i can figure
i just saw my first airsoft unit today, it was an all steel duplicate of an M4,
and man, it looks fun!
i'm curious if you can use metal bb's or just plastic, and if so, does it have the juice to kill a gopher at say 25 yards?
i've heard that you can upgrade the springs to achieve over 500 fps, if so, do you have to register it or what?or would it be illegal?
also, what is the accuracy like, if it has any?
thanks

I would say that you are in the wrong place bud. There are a few airsoft forums out there who may help you out. Short of that I believe that Made Man is the resident A/S geek so maybe drop him a line. Here's what I know

-Replica firearms are prohibited items and must be treated as such.
-You have to register anything over 500 fps as a firearm for sure.
-It would be cheaper and easier to just buy a .22

www. airsoftcanada .com (these forums are not newbie friendly, read the FAQ's and watch your step eh) But to try and answer:
-Airsoft uses only plastic BB's, not metal ones, they are 6mm
-They guns might have enough power, once upgraded a lot, to kill a gopher but the airsoft crowd would be seriously pissed, they're toys not hunting rifles
-Over 500FPS must be registered, that would really piss of the airsoft guys as they like to stay under the radar
-Accuracy depends on the weight of the bb and the velocity, but it aint all that great.

If you want a gopher gun, go for a .22. If you want a cool .22, uprgrade a Ruger 10/22.

   considering the price tag on some of those airsofts, why not just get into firearms. i'm serious. start messing around with an airsoft and you could get into some trouble.want to shoot gophers?" do the gopher a favour and use a rimfire and do it right.i dont mean to discourage you from your interest, but it sounds to me like you need to rethink what you want and why you want it.

i think i'll just stick with my 10/22
i did sign up at a airsoft forum and they definately do not take the sport lightly
still sounds kinda fun though
i signed up at www.mb-airsoft.com
still waiting permission to access forums though

Wack some gophers with a bow and judo points instead of airsoft. Or better yet, buy a real gun that shoots real bullets, like a 10-22 or a Marlin 7000.

Airsoft will shoot bbs with a weight between 0.12 gram and 0.30 gram, so anything aside plastic bbs will fall right down of the barrel (for example, an aluminium BB weights 0.9 gram).

Also, it is possible to upgrade such guns to velocities close to 500FPS, but at 500fps and up, it is considered a firearm and must be registered and you must have a PAL. Also, I highly doubt they would register a fully-automatic firearm. (Read it will be illegal, airsoft is already in a somewhat grey zone, so don't push your luck)

Also, if you push your gun to the limit (i.e. in the 500fps neighborhood) you'll have a breakdown nearly every 10 shots, and these guns are expensive to repair, since most parts come from japan. (Trust me, I've repaired alot of these.)

And no, it won't kill a gopher at 25 yards. In my younger years, I've seen some guys who did manage to kill a partridge, from 3 yards and it took about 300bbs, plus they needed to finish it off by bashing it with the gunstocks (cruel heh?)

As for accuracy, out of the box, consider it accurate up to 50 feet, in no-wind condition, with the hop-up properly adjusted. You can achieve 75 feet accuracy with upgrades, 100 feet maximum effective range.

Bottom line, unless you intend to you use it the way is was designed for (wargames), don't touch airsoft.

P.S. Airsoft guns are not replica firearms by the eye of the law, since they can discharge a projectile. They're in the same category than airguns.

I think very light and large (6mm is near ¼ inch) plastic BB doesn't have
enough density to penetrate the skin of a gopher even at 500 fps. I see
those guns as indoor fun plinking tools mostly. If you want a non firearm
for gopher, try a good airgun in 177 or better 22...

there must have been crack on my mini wheats yesterday morning, i was seriously considering spending 6-700 frickin dollars on a bb gun. hehehe!
but it sure looked realistic, compared to actual copies of the guns
i do own a 10/22 with a fajen thumbhole stock, butler creek bull barrel, and some minor internal mods, those softies just looked cool!
i think i'm gonna buy a nice higher powered scope and try my 7mm sa ultra mag on some gophers, along with the 10/22 as backup!

Don't worry about that, in my best airsoft years, I had a few (3) airsoft guns worth over 2000$ apiece...

Now it's pretty much the same, but with real guns... *sigh* will I be able to get out of this addiction...?

Back on topic : 7mm SAUM might not be ideal for gopher, bullet is not constructed to fragment on impact as they should for varminting, and might also come a bit expensive for an afternoon of gopher shooting :p
