Riding the charging handle is common on semi-autos.

Look on the bright side, at least you aren't like the guy with his SL8 who thought just pivoting the little handle to the side was cocking it and couldn't understand why his new rifle didn't work.

One simple step solves all problems. Read the damn manual!
 
Yep, pretty common mistake on Semi's is riding the bolt :p


Keep in mind with the SL8, that you can rotate the charging handle left or right, then "click" it in place (by pulling or pushing it, I forget which one :p ) and use it as a forward assist, if you want to silently close the bolt. With the USC/UMP it has a cut in the bolt for pushing it fully into battery.
