AK-47: An Assault Rifle for Everyman - Gallery

That rings true for most conscripted soldiers.

I have a few relatives that despise their issued rifles, if only because it was a huge dead weight that they had to carry around on long marches and it got them yelled at alot.

Of course, shooting for fun nowadays would be A-ok, just hard to understand it until you're forced to do it.

MapleSugar,
Taking an AK apart was only a small part of that class. Most of it was marching, digging trenches, crawling in the mud, running with gas mask on and listening to a retired military officer lecturing us on how to protect yourself against American nuclear attack. We did some shooting too. Mostly .22. It was not that much fun. We mainly wanted to play soccer at that age. Actually throwing a grenade was for some reason a part of our physical education class. I remember every time someone would not throw far enough our teacher would scream: " You are going to Afghanistan next year. Throw a grenade like this there and you are going to die !!!". That was kind of funny.

Yeah, no doubt when it is forced on you it takes the thrill away.

I played lots of sports growing up, but had very limited exposure to firearms until I could get my F.A.C. at 18. Naturally, I couldn't get enough. I would have actually enjoyed doing some of the things you had done, I could have done without the screaming instructor though.

Still, I bet you are the man when it comes to knowledge of the AK-47. Personally, I love those rifles and regret ever surrendering mine when they went prohibited here. I never realized if I had hung onto it, I would have a special licence and could buy others.

I have a young friend in the States who went into the Army and became a Ranger right out of high school. He spent most of his time bouncing back and forth from Afghanistan to Iraq. He received two purple hearts, and a bronze star with valor during his tours. He grew up shooting, and is an excellent marksman, but he told me he didn't enjoy the type of shooting the Army taught him either.

BTW, I take it you grew up in Russia/ AKA the Soviet Union?

Yes, I did grow up in Soviet Union before it fell apart. I do not think it was the weight of AK that was an issue with me. I just do not dig Russian firearms. The funny thing is that everyone complains about how 5.56x45 is inferior to 7.62x39 in power. If that is really such a big deal, then why did Russians switch to 5.45x39? I personally prefer Swiss firearms.

I owned an AK when we could own them AND shoot them WITH real mags (and in the bush depending on barrel length). No big deal, the underfold stock is uncomfortable, the accuracy isn't terrific (it's OK-not great) and it's heavy and wide and unwieldy. The Vz58 is a much more elegant, manouverable and better feeling package.

... The 5.45x39 is superior to the 5.56x45 because, out of a short barrel, it will still tumble, whereas the 5.56x45 requires the high velocity offered with a longer barrel to shatter.

If I had a choice between an AK47 and an AK74, I'd go with the 74 in a heartbeat (or any of the later models... Maybe an AK101...), but it kind-of irks me that I will never get a chance to legally own one under our current laws.

"Mais les goûts ne se discutent pas!"

I haven't met a gun I didn't like well almost true don't like RH bolts much prefer the left hand versions but we all have our dislikes. The modern gun laws SUCK to be sure we just need to make sure they don't start sucking worst then they already do....

I forgot to mention AK 47 RULE!!!! I love teasing a friend down in Florida that he's a commie cause he loves his AK-47's so much that he keeps buying more.

5.45x39 is better at defeating body armour. You can carry more ammo. It shoots about 2-3 MOA and very easy to walk the rounds onto a target in full auto. Flatter shooting round does not have the rainbow like trajectory of the
7.62x39 and it gets to your intended target 500 fps faster, less lead time

An AK-74M with side rail and optics is one of the best choices you can make in a common assault rifle.
