Ak - sks

The most major differences off the top of my head.

SKS
- integral magazine
- short stroke gas action
- tilting bolt
- milled receiver

AK
- external magazine
- long stroke gas action
- rotating bolt
- stamped receiver

There are more I'm sure.

aside from one being full automatic what is the difference between the 2?

They only share the same caliber and to the untrained eye "look similar" (i.e. wood furniture, black finish, gas tube design/location and front sight housing are similar).

Oh! and they both have a "K" in their abbreviated names which consist of less than 3 letters :D

Nothing else is the same, although the SKS-D (not the duckbill type) uses AK magazines (I think).

Whats different? Pretty much everything. Two completely different rifles, they are nothing alike except the fact they both shoot the 7.62x39 round and they are both of Russian origin.

There are a few similarities

- sights
- cleaning rod under the barrel
- hammer fired
- look of the gas piston cover/tube

Ummm. That's all I've got.

Pat Sweeny wrote an excellant book on the subject. Included AK, SKS, CZ, Krinks, And Saigas. If these rifles are your geek it's well worth the money.

The AK47 we used t be able to buy (semi-auto) are restricted, maybe even prohibited. I can't remember off hand. SKS are not. Although, if the sks comes with a 10 rd. magazine it must be pinned permanently to only allow for 5 rds. 10 round mag for sks is prohibited.

Same cartridge. :D

But the SKS is a rifle, the AK is a MG.

SKS is slightly longer.

According to those I know that used them in combat the SKS is more accurate then the AK (single shot mode).

Going by today's regs, if the ak47 wasn't prohib, it'd be restricted due to barrel length. And we'd likely find someone to rebarrel some to non-restricted.

No idea what it was years ago. Likely unregulated at some point.

how about reliability wise..
I watched some program on tv and the went on and on how the AK seems to go on whatever.
Like if you had to go to another planet and could take only one rifle it would be the AK.
Are all these SKS guns flooding the market that reliable?
