Hello all, this is actually my first post here on CGN, so please be gentle... :)

My buddy who is not as computer literate as some of us, is looking to purchase either an AK 47(Russian if possible) or CZ 858.

Now my newbie question is, are AK 47s illegal 100%? I mean i think i saw a store here in Montreal selling them, but it was modified to be semi only and the clips only help 5 rounds, they were selling this for $800, it came with 4 clips, shoulder strap, pouches, cleaning kit and was in a cardboard box. Now this was last year, but now after seeing a CZ 858 for the first time a few weeks back, i am wondering if that is what i saw rather than an AK47?? I am going to call them this morning to see what is what...

So lets say it was a CZ 858, is there anything he should be looking out for or looking for in general when purchasing an 858?

Thanks...

Rob...

All AKs and variants are prohibited.
You may have seen a 12-2, 12-3 or 12-5 AK for sale. Only someone with the appropriate endorsement on his PAL would be able to buy it.

ak's are not illegal they're prohibited they can be 12.2,12.3,12.5 class and yes the mags have to be pinned to 5 rd but thats the same with any semi auto centerfire

what you seen is a 858 no doubt

Hello Rob Morin,

they are called magazines (mags), not clips. Just thought you should know that.

Also, I can say with 99,9% certainty that what you have seen is a CZ858.
Your friend will unfortunately never be able to legally own an AK47 in Canada with the current legislation.

The CZ858 is as good as it gets. At least for now ; I've been looking at the "coming soon" section of the tacticalimports.ca website, and they have a pretty exciting rifle on there, the type 81, that they say will be available in 2013, given that it passes the RCMP review.

Cheers.

The cz ,vz, and FSN rifles look similar to the AK but are semi automatic rifles. You can find them at most sponsors check out links above.

The FSN is only available through Marstar.

I doubt you will find an AK for sales in Canada as they are prohibited as others have mentioned above

Thanks for all the great info!

Sorry for saying clips, bad habit i guess...
I will check out the sponsors for an 858

On another quick note...
Last week i bought some 7.62x39 from Wolverine, was very surprised how easy it was, i thought for some reason i would need to show my PAL to the delivery guy, as the receptionist singed for it when it came in via Canpar, makes buying ammo a little easier than running around trying to find a local store that has 7.62x39 as a few places i go here in Montreal never have any non corrosive in stock, only crates and crates of the surplus stuff.. :)

Thanks again everyone and have a great day!

Why would you have to show it to the delivery guy? you should have shown proof when purchasing it though.

For the vast vast majority of Canadians, the AK is a dream. Seeing as how they cannot be imported they are almost unobtanium for those with a 12.X license as well.

The VZ is a far superior rifle to the AK. Its not a heartbreaker that we can't have the AK.

marstar also has ak's :p

Marstar has somewhere between nothing and **** all in stock. Just because there's a pretty picture on their website, does not mean its "in stock" or "available".

Thanks for all the great info!

The Delivery guy has no right in knowing what's in the package, nor does he have the authority to ask for your PAL. Proof of who you are is all he is permitted to ask for. People need to stop ASSuming that every tom #### and harry has the right or obligation to check for your useless piece of purple plastic...(no offense to you, just a general statement)

If you evaluate your interest in certain guns solely based on how they compare to other particular guns, then you and I live on two very different planets.

I mean, if the AR-15 is a far superior rifle compared to 20 other types of rifles, does that mean you're OK with not having the right to own those 20 firearms?

Wanna bet this shows up as a news story?

Headline: Gun used in Montreal shooting legal and better than AK-47 and the ammo is available without a license check.

Who the f**k signs up to a gun site then asks about buying a gun and is concerned whether it was used in a shooting.....

Where did you read anybody being concerned about that? You're the first to even bring up the word in this thread...

yugo m70 full auto in stock full wood $895 folder is a little more ak's are still importable everything is still importable not everyone can own them though

Convince Beretta who owns the rights to "Valmet" to stamp Valmet Hunter or Valmet M78 on the side of an AK and they become non-restricted.

If you really want to split hairs the receiver has to be milled.
