AK47 legality

Yes, some can legally own an AK47 in Canada. How ever, if you do not currently own one, then you never will. Ever. Never ever. So don't even ask.

You can't own one, if you do, you can't legally discharge it on Canadian soil. Besides, AK's are scary and intimidating, I'd rather go hug a tree or get a mocca soy latte instead... ;)

Hey does anyone know if a person can legally own a ak47 in canada

You realize you've just been blacklisted by the CFC, CIA and FBI? See that flower delivery truck across the street??? Stay out of gun stores for a while if you can and watch your back, start burning your garbage if you have a fireplace...

Everyone is messing with you a bit. I will assume you are totally new to the firearms category scene, so here is a run down.

Basically once upon a time everyone could own basically anything that they wanted. Then the Government came along and banned full autos, grandfathering people into that 12(2) category. That is, if you own one before the cutoff date you can keep it until you die, but sooner or later everyone with 12(2) status dies and so no more autos in legal hands.

Next it was converted autos (CA's) whch had their own 12(3) category. Then certain rifles, such as the G3 and AK, which have their own 12(5) category. The same has occurred for pistols, and to own a pistol with barrel less than 105mm you need a 12(6) licence.

So long story short, unless you already have a 12(5) licence that allows you to own an AK, you cannot own one ever until the law changes.

FYI, go to http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/info_for-renseignement/factsheets/prohibited_e.asp

1. 12(2) means full automatics.
2. 12(3) means converted automatics.
3. 12(4) means firearms prohibited by former prohibition order No. 12. You can find out which firearms are in this category on the fact sheet listing restricted and prohibited firearms.
4. 12(5) means firearms prohibited by former prohibition order No 13. These, too, are listed in the fact sheet listing restricted and prohibited firearms.
5. 12(6) means handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm or less or that discharge .25 or .32 calibre ammunition. On licences issued on or after April 10, 2005, these firearms will be referred to as 12(6.1) firearms.

Nothing is illegal to own unless you are comitting a crime (or planning to )with it. Bill C-68 is not legal ......"They (gov`t) commited a crime in creating that Bill"....period end of story. Also here is an interesting little project for you to do. Call as many gun shops in Canada as you can looking for .303 Bitish ammo (south african surplus) or any other surplus amounts. You will find that, for eg. 50,000 rounds will enter a store and all will be sold in 1 week. Why ? simply because Canada was a large manufacturer of Bren guns. I would estimate that there is probably close to 300-400 working full auto Brens out there and people are buying ammo as fast as they can shoot it. Now that being said is there that many "legal" owners? Hell no! are these illegal owners comitting crimes against the people or public in any way? Hell no!........so why the tough laws? Fear and control , power hungry politicians.......

An AK is just an auto 30-30 with a thirty round mag...
(Not really sure of the point I was trying to make)
I know what you are saying....
You are saying an AK (semi auto of course) , other than appearances is no different than a:
VZ-58 (restricted)
CZ-858 (non Restricted)
SKS-D (non restricted)
Ruger Mini-30 (non restrcted)

Now a mini-30 other than caliber and size is no different than a:
M1-Garand (nr)
M-305 (nr)
M1 Carbine (restricted by about 1/2" or so)

etc etc etc.

Does any of this make sense? of course not.
