I have been leery on Turkish shotguns, some of which is what I have heard and less of it was by my own experience. I have always had this perception, rightly or wrongly, of Turkish guns being very poor quality, and in some ways, that may actually be true.
I recently purchased an Akdas Alcor from Aurora vendor Canfirarm. Rifle came in a nice suede case and purportedly works with AR magazines. A different retailer had told me previously not to discount Akdas as it is a higher quality brand in Turkey as it caters to the military there, unlike the civilian Turkish gun market. Still, I was skeptical, but the price was good and so I picked it up a couple of weeks ago, but didn't take it to the club today.
In the meantime I have watched some videos and reviews on it. Surprisingly, there are not a whole lot of reviews on this online (not counting Australian PB version). The USOG reviewer had good things to say about it, and one of the other Canadian reviewers, Bats888 or whatever, said that his first model had problems and needed warranty, and that there were some issues with it, and it did not take metal mags, etc.
I am glad I did not rely solely on reviews for my opinion of this gun. Perhaps it was low expectations, but I will say after shooting about 140 rounds through that this is probably one of the best and most reliable semi-autos on .223 experiences I have had INITIALLY. Who knows, this may become dog poo later, but in shooting it today, I am both impressed and deeply grateful I took a chance and bought this.
Ammo I used today was PMC Bronze, Hornady Superformance, Nosler Varmageddon, and Speer Gold Dot (only 20 rounds of this)
First, I have had very, very few .223 guns in my life that out of the box, comfortably seat a full length PMAG G2 or G3 WITH THE BOLT CLOSED. Usually I have to slap it and slap it hard. It wasn't the case here. All my PMAGS seated with no problems.
Second, ZERO feeding or extraction problems. I have had more than a few guns which needed some break-in (perhaps) or were finnicky on ammo. That had feed issues, including some more recent buys. The Alcor was not in this camp. All rounds fed and ejected perfectly.
Third and this is HUGE. All metal mags inserted and seated fine in the Alcor. No force needed (Bats888 said if you try to seat a metal mag, it may snap off the mag limiter piece) and TNA said the Alcor does not work with metal mags. Not the case here. All mags, whether polymer or steel, of various lengths, worked totally fine without issues and ALL DROPPED FREE with no issues.
Fourth - mated wtih a Holosun 510, I was able to not just hit paper, but had decent groupings. Is it match grade, no. But this is more accurate out of the box than many of my now banned .223 / 5.56.
Fifth - ergonomics are great. Rifle seems to fit me well (I am not a big guy), weight was good, and I very much enjoy shooting a wood stocked semi auto rifle.
Sixth - last round bolt hold open worked every single time.
Only thing that I would have cited as a con was the bolt release switch (not talking about running the charging handle to release - that was fine). I can't say that I love how the bolt release switch was designed. Maybe they wanted to avoid the AR style bolt release to keep this away from ban zealots looking at it. Still, sometimes the bolt release was tremendously stiff. Maybe that's with wear and tear.
With a flashlight using an offset picatinny mount, this thing is ready for any situation. I do wish that there was an MLOK slot on this somewhere, but that's fine....
This is no doubt one of my more satisfying purchases as of late. I am patting myself on the back for not succumbing to my initial fear of this thing turning out like a Mini14. Ya gotta live life without fear!
