Alaskan Hunting License

Forget getting a hunting licence if you plan on shooting USPSA in the U.S. My son and I both did this and the border guy almost turned us back because he said that a hunting licence does't mean diddly squat! The necessary paper work from BATF and a permit to convey your handgun to a border crossing is all you need.

That might work until you get pulled over by a LEO....the only thing that enables a non-immigrant alien from being in possession of a firearm is a hunting license or shooting invitation. In various states, you might need more than that even. At least that's my understanding

If you have problems at the border

??? to get the proper ATF paper work, you need a hunting license or a match invite. if you got in without a form 6 you got lucky. Even with the hunting license they don't have to let you in if you cant prove you are going to a shooting match so an invite is a good idea to have. Even more so for an expensive major match.

Even then they don't have to let you in as you are not a citizen and have no right to be in the US. Form 6NIA is not a permit to let you in the US, as some tend to think, it's a permit that lets you posess firearms and ammo if they let you in

FRom what I understand, the Form 6 has nothing to do with possession. the Form 6 simply enables a person to temporarily import firearms into the US.

The reason the Form 6 requires either a shooting invitation or hunting license is because it is one of those 2 documents which enables legal possession of firearms by a Canadian.

Look at it this way...

The BATF will issue you a Form6NIA when you use a hunting Lic. because with a hunting lic. you fall within one of the "exceptions" to the prohibition on NIA's possessing/importing firearms into the USA... That's it. That's all the BATF cares about... They're following the letter of the law.

When you roll up to US Customs/Immagration and they ask where you're going or what the purpose of your trip is and you say...
"I'm going to a shooting match at ###"
They might, in addition to your Form6NIA ask for something like a match invite to support your stated reason for entering the USA on that occaision.
The same can and has happened if you were to be traveling to Chicago for a buddies wedding...
"Where are you going?"
"To Chicago for a friends wedding"
"Do you have an invitation?"
"Why... yes I do"
"Let me see it"
It's like when you say you're going to Fla. to visit grandma and they ask you exactly where grandma lives... They're just trying to see if you bull####ting :D
I don't get all sweaty over it... I usually have something with me showing a date/time for a match I'm attending... I've used everything from invites printed on club letterhead to simple copies of confirmation emails as well as screen captures of a website showing the date/place for an event...
'Never been hassled.
