So I'm looking into getting a new handgun. I haven't gotten a range membership this year as i don't have much time for shooting anymore. I've heard that I can't even get an ATT for either the range or to bring a gun home unless I have a range membership. Is this true and if so what the heck can I do to get another handgun without shelling out for the membership? Don't really want to say the gun is for collection because then down the road they could deny an ATT because they would likely say the gun is for collection and not for shooting! Thanks for any help.

TSE (Calgary) has associate memberships which are only 35 bucks a year, and perhaps if you look around Edmonton you can find someone there who can provide a similar service! (that, or maybe they can do the membership long-distance; I haven't tried since I'm a Calgarian but it seems like it would be difficult to say the least). Chickenfeed, really!

Buy it, short term ATT to take it home is not a problem,

But they recently started asking for range membership for the long term ATT, but they still give the any range any time any restricted ATT once you have a membership. :D

hell they still fill out your forms for you :)

Im pretty sure the range at west edmonton mall has the associate membership thing too (I forget what the name of the place is now)

but hey, if you're in the edmonton area, I bet they're in the phonebook :)

You can always go to P&D and get a membership to Sherwood Park Fish and Game outdoor range... it's less than $100 for the year...

Plus they have some nice shoot'n out there!

That's a tad cheaper than for us city folk. :p Cheapest range I found in Calgary was 350.

Really? C&DTSA south of Shepard is $240.00 for a new membership ($160.00 for early renewal) and MVMA range west of Olds is only $100.00 per year ($50.00 for early renewal) and it's only a 45 min drive from my place in NW Calgary.

Based on recent experience and a conversation with the CPFO Alberta:

- Short-term ATT will not be issued to anyone wishing to move a handgun from point A to point B without proof of range membership.

- Long-term ATT will not be issued without proof of range membership.

- RPAL renewal will not be processed without proof of range membership.

- Phoenix Range membership is acceptable, as they have a club that shoots there regularly. Wild West is not (he was very clear about this) as there is no organized club associated with the range.

Note that this is not law. It is policy. Mr. Sawchuk's policy is based on the idea that, in Canada, there are two reasons to own a handgun - target shooting and collection. If one has identified themselves as a target shooter, then they must belong to a range. In the absence of a range membership, the target shooter is no longer target shooting, and thus not eligible for any of the paperwork related to this pursuit.

Membership at the Whitecourt range is $25.00 per year (see http://www.wfga.ca/Membership/membership.html). Seems a low enough price to get the CPFO off your back.

I truly despise bureaucracy, but until the politics demand change, we're stuck playing their ballgame. Good luck.

What happens if a person were to move domiciles? Will they issue a ATT for the move of restricted firearms from one to the other if no membership is had?

I assume they'd issue a short-term one for that.

They have tightened up, because initially when they separated out the long-term BC and Alberta ATTs they said IPSC membership was okay if you wanted one for BC, but now they're saying you have to be a member of a club in BC if you want a long-term BC ATT.

I don't particularly want to join a club in BC but it's a PITA because I have to get a short-term ATT to drive through BC to get to Washington and Idaho.

I assume this is something to do with the BC CFO as well though, I doubt the Alberta CFO came up with this on his own.

Never really had a problem with Alberta though. If you buy a restricted firearm you have to show proof of range membership if you want it registered for target shooting anyway, so the simple thing to do is mail order it because then you don't need an ATT to get it to the house.

Then they automatically send the long-term ATT with the registration if its your first one.
