Alberta Big Game Draws

Strange that they haven't figured out the Mule deer draws yet, does anyone know the story on that?

I have no idea if the rumor is true, but I've heard speculation from a few people that the government is planning on giving more tags this year to try to combat CWD in certain WMUs. I probably shouldn't spread rumors, but I'm not sure what else logically it might be.

My buddy entered the Mule doe draw for his area and was telling me of the hold-up. The CWD might be the plausible reason but I also mentioned to him that Mule doe & fawns (usually two's but 3's are common) have been regular visitors to our yard & garden throughout every summer in memory....this year "noda", some singles but not a sign of a doe with a baby at all, gets me thinking there might have been a fawn miscarriage mortality issue that the biologist know about.

There has been a report on CTV news that there are talks of having a cull on mule deer, because of CWD. It was suggested from the federal government to enact this procedure. This cull will be conducted in the southern prairies.

The mule deer cull seems plausible given how bad CWD is getting in the mule deer population the SE part of the province. I read the report on CTV as well and it seems the Feds may be putting pressure on Alberta to really make an effort to try and slow down the spread this year. I would assume that Alberta Fish & Wildlife may now award more mule deer tags in some WMU's with required CWD testing and combine that with cull's in the really bad area's to see if that can slow down the spread.
I had my mule deer buck from 406 tested last year (was negative) even though it wasn't required but surprisingly positive tests are starting to show up to the east of the foothills so CWD is making its way west slowly but surely......:(

If a person queries "My Wild Alberta" on Facebook, they will find the results for the amount of draws given out. The draw are for Antelope and mule deer, for both genders. Best of luck the the applicants.

Thanks for the info Track.
Looks like they are giving out plenty of tags this year for mule deer. In fact according to that information they are allocating 2 tags each for successful antler-less mule deer applications in my WMU. Seems like they are really wanting to work on the CWD numbers or at least make an attempt to.

Yes, lots of mule deer tags, especially the does. I read that the federal government got involved and mentioned to the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments to get their act together and reduce the population. Personally, both provinces sat on their hands and did very little. In some area's, buck tags doubled, and some went-up by a few. Outfitters doubled their allocations to catch-up from last year, hence, no clients from out of country.

I did some math on the trophy antelope. There are 7269 people in the draw code with a P11 or better. Looks like 992 of tags were drawn this year a slight increase over last year iirc.

From the 2020 draw summary, I should be eligible this year for a trophy antelope buck, and my son a trophy mule deer buck. I guess we will only find out on August 12 for confirmation.

I don’t know very many guys who go out of their way to shoot a bunch of mule does. Especially if they are in an area full of cwd.
