Wondering if anybody has any experience hunting in WMU 536 & 539 in Alberta? As you guys probably know there is a Bison special licence draw to hunt them in Jan/Feb. Anybody else thinking of putting in for this draw? I think it would be kind of cool, always wanted a buffalo hide coat. :)

Think "snowmobile".

Yes, I am putting in for this draw. Be forewarned;, even though SRD has said that the local first nations are on side, I have heard rumblings to the contrary. They were pretty pissed-off about the bison that were shot in the Caribou Mtns.

Good luck in the draw.

I hate to see how things would turn out if one felt threatened for his life by the locals. If I were in the middle of nowhere and someone tried to burn my veicle or similar, I would feel threatened.

Is all thisjust rumor? anyone have any experiences ?

Me and my buds put in for it too, why not right ?

As for being worried about my truck getting burned out, well, I would see anyone willing to do that as being a threat to my health and well-being and would take appropriate action.

I hear what your saying, it would just be rather uncomfortable to have to deal with that $hit.

I will be making some calls on Monday. I would hate to turn a dream hunt into a nightmare, particularly if I bring my son along. I don't need the drama... Destroying someones truck in the middle of nowhere in January might get someone killed...

I put in for the draw as well. I have some experience in the area, and it definately can be "interesting". It's funny, you don't hear much about the problems in this particular area until you spend some time up here. The only bison I have seen were off of the highway. I imagine if one did some exploring around the Chinchaga river north of highway 58 (I think it's 58) you might find some good spots. Whenever I have seen them off the highway it's been right around the Chin. If a guy gets lucky with the draw, buying a bunch of maps and making some quad trips before the winter probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

My hunting partner and I put in for the draw as well. As for the rumors... I've done my fair share of work up north while flying helicopters and a lot of the stories get blown out of proportion. Excersizing caution and good judgement tends to keep a man out of trouble more often than not....at least it works for me.

I just got home tonight from that area,I've always found if you an idiot looking for trouble you can usualy find it no matter where you go looking.I've traveled around N .AB & Bc for years & have never had any trouble, heard lots of stories though.I've found when those guys are spining their yarns if you say youve been they usualy stop. Not saying the natives are perfect ,but I know for a fact that some white guys use natives as a scap goat for their own actions.Although I have seen some weird s**t go on in the bush.Just my 2 cents.robin

I carry a Sat phone in the back country for safety. We hunt goat in the mountains and if a person got hurt we have a way to get them out. If I was hunting that far in the back country there I would carry a sat phone as well not just for the people trouble that mite happen but for real problems that do happen. We have a lot of first nations people here and some are friends of ours so to say they are any worse than others out there is just not right. The problems some may have had was probably with a select few people and they probably pissed them off with a loud mouth. At least that is what I have seen in the past.

By the way to wet your appetite here are some pictures of the two I mounted for some friends that did the hunt you are talking about.
