Hey guys

So I've heard that boar hunting exists in Alberta, but that's where the knowledge ends. Has anyone here been successful, and although hunters want to keep here spots private, is there any crown land where people have seen them? On a second note, what would you use to hunt them? Lots of pictures on Google showing people using everything, bows shotguns and rifles, does anything go? And last....are they good eats?

wildboarcanada.ca ... has some info the iphone and android apps have the most information.

There are a couple of ranches you can hunt them on. Cost is around $600. It is hardly hunting though they are small areas and fenced. Hunting with a bow would be more of a fair challenge. You need to put them down quick so they don't crawl into thick bush. So if using a rifle look for a 270 minimum.

Finding them on crown land would be next to impossible IMO. The few truly wild herds in AB would be a very well kept secret known only to locals. I think you can hunt them year round so that's why there is such demand.

Yes they are nice to eat the wilder the better. I hunted some in Europe that had been feeding on acorns. Amaaaazing!

The added little de-incentive(?) to share info, is that the province of Alberta funds a bounty program with rural counties that actually subscribe to this effort to knock them out of the province. With $50 per carcass, a few of them could at least cover gas & lunch money.

maybe

I live in one of the counties with the $50 bounty. Only boars I've seen in 12 years here were a couple that escaped from the farm one day and were shot by the neighbor the next. The bounty is in place primarily to allow people to shoot boars that might escape. I doubt there is much of a self sustaining population anywhere in AB.

Google "albertas-wild-boar-invasion-widening-says-top-exterminator"

I reckon there are a lot more boars around than you think. In the last few years I have been seeing people posting pictures of boars they are getting on trail cameras set out to get bear or deer pics.

They are native to northern Europe, why shouldn't they do well here in Alberta?

I hope we can get on top of them and keep their number extremely low. A couple good exterminators should be hired to work on them.
