Posted back to Alberta after 12 years, going to Wainwright. Yes, i’m happy with that. Pretty much where i started if you don’t count Cornwallis.
Anyway, was not a hunter/gun guy etc when i left. What is the deer, grouse, etc hunting like out that way, and is there much crown land to shoot on?
Looking for 15-20 acres within 30 minutes to the base in WX myself, but thats not guaranteed that i`ll find that.

It's some of the best deer hunting around. IIRC they also allow military personnel to hunt the base without the draw wait. Last fall the on base hunt was cancelled due to covid. It's not as good as it was 20 years ago but nothing in Alberta really is. Welcome back.

There are many Wainwright CGNutters on here who can lend a hand!

Good on ya for heading back to that neck of the woods. It’s certainly a different place since I was there for Battle School in 1977.... 7708 Canal Du Nord!! Good times!

Cheers, Barney

I was 8902- Amiens Platoon. Battle school was good times. I remember it being a lot more fun than it probably was.
I`m from Saskatchewan so going to see the folks will be a lot easier

The Alberta-Saskatchewan border area is literally the best whitetail deer hunting in the world. Crown land is not as plentiful as it is in western Alberta, but it's still not bad.

Which unit?

You won't find a whole lot of public land around the area but you will likely be able to find some good places to hunting you just ask around. Decent deer hunting in the area and grouse is good or bad depending on the year and where you hunt.
If you shoot lots nose hills gun club 35 min south has cheap memberships and and amazing facility for all kinds of shooting sports.

Which unit? Back in the day or now?

35 min is closer than i drive now. Is there a gun club on the base?

Not on the base myself but being a member of the nose hills gunclub who sells memberships I have given range tours to a pile of base guys who say the range there is a joke. Check out nhgc.biz for the range website and to see all the stuff we have.
