So i had a general bull elk tag for North western Alberta and access to some ranch land between Grande Prairie and Valleyview. It was going to be a tight window between work and life schedules this year which equated to about 3.5 days of hunt time.

It was new territory for us so it meant no pre-hunt scouting or set-up. First day involved setting up some tree stands and a couple of ground blinds in spots that seemed likely runs for whitetail and Elk since we had tags for both. Bush blocks adjacent to grain crop fields showed the most promise. The challenge is most of the crop fields are a couple of sections in size (1000+ acres).

Lots of Whitetail opportunity for bucks in the 8 point, 140 class size but nothing really significant showed up. The morning of the last day I was moving along the tree line of the grain field just at first light. Out grazing was a small herd of Elk. Through the binos I zeroed in on the lone Bull . He was legal with more than 3 points on at least one side and I ranged him at 348 yards.

1 shot, Sako 75 in 300 WinMag, 342 yards, Barnes Vor-TX 165gr ammunition. A decent 5x5 but not a monster. Should be good eating.

Any elk you can drive the truck right up to is a good elk! Can’t get down most back roads here, wouldn’t get far in a field.

well done there man, i find it fascinating that the way your countries an states do the tags its really interesting for an aussie with no tags an managements per say... something id like to bring into the culture here to help the herds...
good to see so many Cows/hinds , i find it weird that You guys are allowed to belt the Bulls around yet seems low on Hind take? perhaps hinds/Cows dont get as much social media attention as they should, an i would assume there s a healthy harvest ratio goin on?

none the less- well done! full freezer, happy hunter

That is how the same as one of my party's two successful elk hunts. A single short cow bugle at dusk, then get into the treeline before legal shooting time. A legal bull had come out into a bow in the field and was sniffing around.
