Hey guys, a buddy of mine had a banner year hunting a farm about an hour from Calgary last year and discovered this year (no surprise) that the population control might have been a little too effective. :) I am (was?) supposed to be heading out that way this summer, but only if he's able to secure some more spots. How has the gopher-action been this year in Alberta, and...generally speaking...do the numbers seem to be as good as last year?

Tips on where to look would obviously be welcome, but I'm more curious about your opinions of this year vs. last.

Thanks!

No gophers in Alberta at all? :) Guess pest/fun hunting of this sort doesn't always stir-up the most interest among those frequenting this forum, but I was hoping to get some input before I give WestJet any money.

Numbers in my spot west of Calgary are way up over last year. There is definately a cycle to populations - I have no idea if it's related to weather, food supply, genetics, or a combo of all three.

Personally, I have seen more gophers this year than the past two, but that's pretty anecdotal!

Well, my deal is to eradicate the dang things. Shooting about 1000 a year for the last 3. this has however, reduced my total this year to only 172 as of last night. Not many around and am now looking for another field. Shouldn't be too hard...

They're locally extinct on our land, we went too far and they actually help our pastures. We noted a distinct drop in pasture quality when they disappeared. Seems the buggers are quite the little engineers, aerating the soil and turning it, they bring the deep black soil to surface and the most fertile parts of the pastures are their old mounds.
