Lol seriously i hear you about the yorkies, but them living over listening to my mother crying about her dead dogs. i'd rather have a dead yote. I am sure every male and some females know how well a mother can lay a guilt trip on us, and it works, if you say otherwise who are you really lying to?

Oh yeah... Good point, I just wanted to have a little bit of passive protection from the buggers if they're rabid, or sneak up on me.

If they detect you, they will be gone. First they will hear you, then they will circle downwind to try to smell you - only then will they really try to see you. If you want to get them don't be anywhere near your vehicle. Set up somewhere where your downwind area is hard to reach without the coyotes being seen. Make sure you are obscured from sight using camoflage or any natural cover. Having a partner is a plus so you can watch more ground. They are sneaky and WILL try to get downwind and smell you. If there is one there are usually others waiting nearby. If one exposes himself and keeps looking back towards the bush he is likely a scout and there are more of them. Lure (call) them in close but shoot before they get downwind of you. Give them an audible "WOOF" to stop them dead in their tracks. At this point you will have seconds to take the shot.

Go get yourself a 20 dollar primos or similar closed reed jackrabbit call to start and get on youtube and practice calling. You can learn a ton about calling on the internet. I had no mentors learning to call I simply copied Randy Anderson from Calling All Coyotes and now it seems when I call I get the whole forest showing up. Still waiting for my wolf though.....

Worth it to buy a video and watch the professionals do it. Remember though that they don't always show up. Sometimes they just aren't in the area and don't hear you!

Even though you have a ton of coyote activity in that property you might call and get nothing for your first tries. Keep at it. Best to go at dawn and dusk. Don't waste your time during the day unless you actually see one in the area. I call in an area that is absolutely plagued with coyotes and during the day I seldom ever get any action.

Be quiet, and still. When you see your coyote for the first time don't be over excited (easier said than done). Calmly pivot to line up the shot ONLY when the dog is looking away or in the direction of travel, if he is looking your way FREEZE. When he gets to a good range that you know you can make with your rifle, your shooting ability, and the wind. TAKE HIM!

Good luck. Welcome to the addiction.

Monkey Nutz,
You asked for advice, well here's mine.
It looks like you have a few volunteers to help you and your family with the yotes. I would invite all the willing participants to the family acerage for a Saturday morning and do a drive. Not only will you drive every yote out off the property, but I'm sure you will meet some very interesting and knowledgeable Canadian Gun Nutz. Have your mother put a pot on chilly ( or something similar) for lunch and have a box of beer available for after the hunt.
You will have a better chance to clearing out the yotes and meet some terrific people as well. While your having a little lunch you might just get some experienced people giving you some first hand advice. Having seen the property they can help with your set-up position, blind/ camo, calling etc.
No better way to spend the day in my opinion.
Good Luck.

shoot one or two and 3 will move in.

keep an eye on the dogs or they will be food one day...if not by these yotes then by others.

that country livin

Im not saying dont shoot the yotes....by all means blast as many as you can...just dont think you are permanently solving the problem.

My advice to you is dont say a word to the neighbours. You could end up opening up a can of worms. Just do what needs to be done.

If it is done on your parents property in a legal manner and area it is none of the GD neighbours business!!

This...

You never know if one of them likes to feed the chopping-block scraps to "the dogs" (ie: the coyotes).

They might take exception, but have no right to interfere with legal-activity on private property.

If they are dining on cats and dogs close to yards they will call very easy most likely. Find some #4 Buck in that shotty - pattern to make sure its good.

My guess is they come in hot and hard to start.

It isn't a bad idea to take a couple of the guys who have offered up - the first time you call you will be amazed at the results when you go with a person who has those skills.

Letting the neighbors knowmight not be a bad thing, i injured one with a 243 and it hobbled into my neighbors back yard and did the funky chicken until death in front of the kids! Not an ideal situation!
