Oh yeah... Good point, I just wanted to have a little bit of passive protection from the buggers if they're rabid, or sneak up on me.
If they detect you, they will be gone. First they will hear you, then they will circle downwind to try to smell you - only then will they really try to see you. If you want to get them don't be anywhere near your vehicle. Set up somewhere where your downwind area is hard to reach without the coyotes being seen. Make sure you are obscured from sight using camoflage or any natural cover. Having a partner is a plus so you can watch more ground. They are sneaky and WILL try to get downwind and smell you. If there is one there are usually others waiting nearby. If one exposes himself and keeps looking back towards the bush he is likely a scout and there are more of them. Lure (call) them in close but shoot before they get downwind of you. Give them an audible "WOOF" to stop them dead in their tracks. At this point you will have seconds to take the shot.
Go get yourself a 20 dollar primos or similar closed reed jackrabbit call to start and get on youtube and practice calling. You can learn a ton about calling on the internet. I had no mentors learning to call I simply copied Randy Anderson from Calling All Coyotes and now it seems when I call I get the whole forest showing up. Still waiting for my wolf though.....
Worth it to buy a video and watch the professionals do it. Remember though that they don't always show up. Sometimes they just aren't in the area and don't hear you!
Even though you have a ton of coyote activity in that property you might call and get nothing for your first tries. Keep at it. Best to go at dawn and dusk. Don't waste your time during the day unless you actually see one in the area. I call in an area that is absolutely plagued with coyotes and during the day I seldom ever get any action.
Be quiet, and still. When you see your coyote for the first time don't be over excited (easier said than done). Calmly pivot to line up the shot ONLY when the dog is looking away or in the direction of travel, if he is looking your way FREEZE. When he gets to a good range that you know you can make with your rifle, your shooting ability, and the wind. TAKE HIM!
Good luck. Welcome to the addiction.
