Could someone please explain to me the strategies and proper ways to go about participating in the Alberta Draw system?
999 vs. actually applying and such?
Say I want to apply for a moose draw, but this is my first year, what strategy do I take? Obviously I won't be getting anything this year, but how best to go about increasing my chances in future years?

999 is used when you don't want to hunt a particular species in a given year but just want to increase your priority. If you apply, you want to draw the tag. If you don't have enough priority, then you just get a priority point. With either option you get a priority point if you don't draw. In your case it wouldn't matter which option you chose as you'd get a priority point with either.

Not true!! In the case of the last sentence.
Depending on what zone(s) you are applying for, it is possible to get drawn for moose with a "0" priority.
As well, other species are available with a "0".

Here is a link to the 2013 draw results. This will help you with your draw application decisions.

I was just going by his statement, "Obviously I won't be getting anything this year, but how best to go about increasing my chances in future years?"

But hey, you are right that some moose zones require no priority...I just assumed by the OP's statement that he was not applying in one of those WMUs ;) Good info as always Guido!

999 is gone, replaced by, I just want to increase priority. Nothing difficult or tricky about that. ;) Gotta 10 for a 418 elk draw, so I've selected increase priority for moose. so i don't get lucky enough to have both in the same year. Yup, some moose zones may as well have no priority requirements at all, usually a ##### to hunt, as well.

Yes, they may be a ##### to hunt. Just wanted to make sure a new hunter was not mislead.
