Alberta Engineer – New to Firearms, Long-Term Focus on Gunsmithing

Hi folks,

I’m a professional engineer based in Alberta. I’m fairly new to firearms and still waiting on my Restricted PAL (been about 4 months now), but I’ve been diving into marksmanship and the technical side of modern platforms over the past several months—particularly Glocks, the Sig P320, ARs, and others.

That said, I’ve been around guns in a light way since I was a kid—shooting pellet guns growing up in rural BC, and more recently getting out with friends for occasional range time with shotguns, pistols, and hunting rifles. I’ve also been using airguns and airsoft (including modifying my ProForce M17 to cleanly remove the orange tip) as a way to develop fundamentals and marksmanship while I wait for my RPAL.

My background is over 20 years in mechanical/manufacturing engineering, machining, and prototyping/design. Longer term, I’m hoping to slowly build toward offering gunsmithing and technical services—with a focus on historical restoration, custom builds, and museum/theatrical support.

Right now, I’m learning all I can and trying to do things right—legally, technically, and with respect to the firearms community. This forum is a goldmine of knowledge, and I’m looking forward to learning more, connecting with others, and maybe contributing down the road.

Thanks for the welcome—and thanks to those of you who share so generously here.
