If you are looking for anywhere close to Calgary to shoot gophers, it's almost all privately owned land, so you will have to get permission to shoot. Like everyone else, you'll have to go knock on a few doors to obtain access to someone's land. If they have gophers, this is usually not a problem as long as the landowner doesn't have livestock nearby or happens to be working in their field at the time. Try going to the south west of Calgary along Highway 22, there are lots of gophers and you may be able to get permission if you ask politely. You're not coming at the best time to shoot them though as the grass is quite long and the little buggers are hard to see. They also don't like the heat very much and aren't out in as great of numbers. There is some crown land in the Porcupine Hills SW of Calgary that you could find some gophers, but you'll have to drive a few hours. You’ll need to obtain a map or two to determine where the crown land is though.
