Hi. Trying to get my GF into grouse hunting and have covered about 500km's of lease roads with only one grouse being seen.

Scoured the trees, deadfall, clover, cut lines and man I am snake bit so far.

Anyone care to share a hotspot by PM? If I can get her one of two I know we are on for this being a good hobby

Don't know how many more times I can drag her out of bed at 5am before this ends.

I live in Leduc and we've been as far as brazeau and swan hills so far.

Thank you!

cannot help with a good spot but grouse and other game birds seem to go in cycles it could be a low time in the cycle. plus if lots of predators there won't be many around best place to look is old logging roads that are over grown and have no signs of traffic.

Can't talk of location but your sightings may improve later in the season as the foliage begins to thin and the birds lose that natural cover. Hopefully if you stick with it you'll eventually run into some grouse and keep the GF spirits up not to mention your own. Good luck out there.

I would recommend getting in touch with Leduc Fish and Game, they have a good group of guys that I am sure will put you on to the right trail. I have even seen them around Telford Lake so they are around. One of those situations when as soon as you have the gun the game becomes a little scarce.

Wait for the leaves to drop. This time of year cover is thick and going after birds by cruising logging roads etc you will pass by many and never see them. When the heavy cover is on its a game of hunting with a bird dog. Since I no longer own a dog I wait until leaves are off the trees and I have some extended visibility.

This time of year is hard for grouse. Bush Is still green and lush. I've been out a few times with the kids south of Edson and we've shot a few bit I know there are way more than we where seeing. Most where still in family groups so not spread out yet and when I was bow hunting elk I seen a ton in the deep bush along the edges of newer cut blocks. My favorite time to hit the woods for chickens is after a rain and when all the leaves are off the trees and the moose are rutting

check out areas of younger forest: 10-30 years old. Regenerating cutblocks of mixed forest. Walk the old in-block roads. If you are in areas with mostly old forest, check the brushy spots like along streams and bog edges. And you don't have to get up at 5. Even if you are a long ways from potential hunting areas, the birds feed again in the afternoon, so be out there mid-late afternoon when they are active & you should bump into some.

Thank you for that.

Good advice already given, but remember it's still very early in the season. I always have the most success/fun when the temps start to steadily drop below zero at night. By this time, a lot of foliage is on the ground making visibility in the bush a little better, berries on the ground where they will be feeding, and on the frosty mornings, they'll often be out in the open sunning themselves, usually in the middle of the trail. Have fun, but don't loose faith.

Remember, it's not about how much game you bring home, but the experience of just getting out and enjoying yourselves. That's what truely matters.

Go north of whitecourt on highway 43 for about 45km, on the right is Eagle Tower Road. Go to km8 turn left. That's the FC 45 road. I've seen oodles of them in there, I'm not going to gaurentee you'll get some but I gaurentee you'll get some lol.

No problem, another good spot is just past the DOT scales north of wct go till you see a roadside turnout (about 5km) the first right it's right at the top of the hill. Thats the Chickadee Road. That's one of my favorite spots, I've had lots of luck there. Try and be there at first light otherwise wait till about 6pm, we've had lots of rain lately but it's been dry for a few days now so should be good hunting!

Sounds good! It's a 2.5 hour drive from my house to those locations, so I have to plan the day well, but I really appreciate it!
