I have a relative currently residing in alberta who has invited a couple of my cousins out for an Elk hunt ....

Everything seemed to be going well as far as planning is concerned, non-resident licences were secured for the 4 who are going etc .... But there seems to be a problem with the regs over there, and nobody they have spoken to so far seems to have a straight answer.

Apparently the regs over there mention something about them requiring a licensed guide since it will be 4 non-residents and 1 resident (or some other such ratio).

Is anyone familiar with the details of the regs over there and provide some insight in the matter ?

If I can remember right, a resident hunter host can only host 2 hunters....not 4. But this should answer any question you might have.

There is nothing wrong with the wording in the regulations. It's very basic and clear. A hunter host may only host two non residents.

Here's the wording:

A Hunter Host

Must be an adult resident, and be eligible to hold recreational hunting licences.
Must be the holder of a valid WIN and Hunter Host Licence (below).
may not provide services for gain or reward, or accept remuneration, directly or indirectly, for such services.
may host a maximum of two (2) hunters/year, either Non-residents (Canadian), Non-resident Aliens or a combination thereof. If hosting 2 Non-resident Aliens, at least 1 must be a relative.
may host Non-resident Aliens only if the host has not hosted a Non-resident Alien in the previous two (2) fiscal years (April 1 to March 31).
must report to the Fish and Wildlife Division by December 31 in the year of harvest, all hunting activities by the Non-resident Aliens he or she hosted.
must accompany the hunter(s) named on his or her Hunter Host Licence while they are hunting big game under the authority of the Hunter Host Licence.

And here's a link to the regs:

So in other words, even if they did find a 2nd resident to go with them, it's still a no go since he wouldn't be a realtive himself ? Any solution to that problem ?

Also what defines a "Hunter Host" ? I supopose this is not your regular type of hunting license ?

Can those non-residents even need a "host" of can they simply head out to hunt on their own ?

If they are all Canadians, I dont think they have to be a relative, it just usually is a friend or relative since he cant accept payment or reward for doing it. Here is the definition from the regs.

"Hunter Host - an adult resident who is the holder of a valid Hunter Host Licence. To obtain this licence, the adult must hold a valid WiN and be eligible to hold recreational hunting licences. A Hunter Host may not provide services for gain or reward, or accept a fee for services, directly or indirectly.
The licence authorizes the holder (usually a relative or friend of the hunters to be hosted) to host a maximum of two non-residents (Canadian) or non-resident aliens* named on the host's licence to hunt wolf, coyote and big game throughout the province."

That is called POACHING

I gave you a link to the regs...why not read them, then come and ask the questions. That last one you asked is ridiculous. :runaway:

I'm not from Alberta, but it seems clear to me. Your relative that lives there needs to get his neighbor or another friend to host 2 of your cousins.

The non-related host can only guide 2 people that are Canadian.
The related host can guide 2 Canadians, or 2 non-Canadians relatives.
No Non-Alberta residents are allowed to hunt on their own without a host.

The first question here is, are they all Canadian??
