Got an online hunter survey in Alberta this morning and did it.
I have gotten into the habit of taking a tail feather from each grouse I shoot in a season and poking it into a block of "plastic snow" for a sort of "trophy" for the year. It was easy to tally exactly how many birds I had killed for the survey.
The number of moose and deer I killed was easy to remember but grouse and geese need to be counted some how to give good answers in this survey.
Anybody else doing game surveys?
This grouse committed suicide one morning. I was sitting in a ground blind watching for deer and the grouse was 50 yards away eating alder buds. So after a couple hours with only seeing a couple deer too far to shoot, I packed up and walked back to my truck and got a .410 double. I came back and wasn't sure where the grouse had been and got through a fence too soon. I looked around and then went back near the fence to get my bearings. All of a sudden I see the grouse stick his head out from behind a fence post. His curiosity cost him his life.
