Hey Guys,

Got a few shots of a good bull yesterday through the spotter that I figured I would share with you guys. This bull was with a herd of about 20 animals with ten bulls in the herd. We saw 2 herds yesterday as well and the other herd had a big herd bull in it but was a long ways away when we spotted them.

This herd is in a huntable area in the season, on land that permission would be quite easy. Would be nice to have a tag!!!

These are elk in the prairies. True prairies. At least a hundred miles from any 'bush' or good hills. Out in the sage flats like they were found years ago....out in antelope country!

Don't get me wrong, the ones I hunt are at home in (or very close to) black timber. I've generally seen them melting into (or coming out of) thick bush.

It just seems unusual to see them walking around in the open (up here, anyway). I know they were historically a plains animal, I just considered that era to be long gone. True prairie - that's just very cool.

They definatly have a strong resurgence in the past few years. There are seasons from the BC border through to the SK border down in the sage prairies. Its definatly pretty cool to be out hunting antelope and see a herd of elk! I have seen 3 different herds in the past week out in the grass. Very cool to see and some giant bulls no doubt!

My boys thought I was having some kind of weird reaction when I was looking at those pictures. The elk and that terrain are simply amazing. Some day...:)

Elk

Awesome pics! Judging by the quality of his rack I think he might belong to the farm in the background. Looking forward to hunting Grande Prairie area first week November, hopefully in some snow.

I think you need a p 9 or 10 to do that hunt. I can't wait.

Still, I'm looking out the cabin window, strapping on the knee brace and getting ready to climb. There was a big 6x6 here a couple of days ago so we shall see.

it is amazing the amount of Wapiti and Moose that now reside on the prarie. Most of the farmers have left the land , the remaining farms are much larger and there is much less "living off the land" among rural people.
