Just a quick question to do with a restricted purchase from an individual. From what I understand I don't need an ATT in place if he has it sent by courier directly to my home. Also, the seller should not need a special ATT if he has the courier pick the package up at his place of residence. Am I correct in this? I have not bought a handgun from a private individual for years and am going to place a phone call to make sure I am correct. Just thought I would ask here first. Thanks.

Makes sense.
All that the ATT is required for is the transport from the sender's home to the post-office.
An ATT is not needed for the receiver to take it home from the post office.

When I shipped my pistol off to the 'smith for work, the firearms office required me to get an ATT to take it to the PO to ship, and they said that if I missed the pistol's return delivery to my door, I would need another ATT to pick it up from the PO and to transport it home. I'm thinking door to door would be fine, but anything else would need papers. Your phone call should clear things up quickly.

You need an ATT to pick it up at the Post Office, also some couriers won't ship guns which is why we use Canada Post. If you ship it via a courier that doesn't ship guns (cause they don't know it is a gun) and it gets lost then the SHTF.

My experience as well.

Don't know what the big deal is with going thru the motions of obtaining the STATT. They email the ATT within 10 min of making phone contact. Just make sure you have the street addr of the PO handy.

Not sure of what is technically legal or not, what I am very sure of att.'s are super easy to get in ab and take just a few minutes to get, and are worth getting just in case something goes sideways. They will email it to you at most 10 minutes after you call.

You don't know what's in the box, so why is an ATT needed??

Really you think that will fly?

If you do have an issue you defense is destroyed with two questions. Thoes questions are, did you order a gun from so and so? And is this package, that you have no idea whats in it, from so and so? Sounds like a solid defense to me.

If you receive a package full of cocaine are you if possession of it if it is unopened?

Same thing for a gun, you need an ATT to take it from the post office. And before you say I do it all the time and they have never said anything. Show me where either the act, the regs, you current ATT, or the canada post act says it is in ok.

You cant because its not true.

Just because there is next to no chance of getting caught does not make it legal.

Just to play the role of the Devil's advocate.

You have an ATT to go to the range. So if you pick up the gun at the post office and go straight to the range, that would be legal. And after stopping off at the range, go straight home.

Problem solved.

That depends, is that "reasonably direct".

4. A chief firearms officer who issues an authorization to transport shall attach to it the condition that the firearm be transported by a route that, in all the circumstances, is reasonably direct.

More like," you have a parcel at the PO." "What's in it?" "I dunno, paper just says parcel". "Well, I'm kind of busy, pick it up on the way home will you?" "Ok, sure." Cue swat team for unauthorised parcel pickup. Kind of hard to believe that scenario, really. - dan

Sounds right, but if you are a first time restricted owner you will need an ATT to take your pistol to the range.

Like I said, whether it is likely you will get caught or not, does not make it legal. If that is what you want to do that is fine, fill your boots. The issue is telling new people that it is legal and the way it is supposed to be done.

The point I'm trying to make, is not whether it is legal or illegal. How many parcels do you get? There are three people living in my house, and a fair bit of mail order going on. There is no way to know where the parcel came from until I get the parcel. See the issue? Or do you figure everyone should get a TATT everytime they go to the PO to get whatever, just in case? If you actually know that the parcel you are going to get is a gun, then yes, you need a piece of magic paper that makes your actions ok. The whole scenario is ludicrous. Your LTATT is good for gunsmiths, gun shops, ranges, and every border in the province, but not for going to the PO? Just more bureaucratic nonsense, making us jump through foolish hoops that do nothing to prevent or solve real crime. Jesus, it pisses me off just to write it down. - dan

I think we went through this a couple months ago.

...Assuming that you need an ATT to pick up a restricted firearm at the post office----Wouldn't the law ALSO require you to open the package, install a trigger lock, and put the gun in a locked case before you can transport it? ...

Yeah, unboxing a gun at the post office sounds like a GREAT idea.

To carry the confusion further....

If I receive and ATT for the post office and knowingly pick up a parcel that contains a handgun, am I required to open it up on the counter in front of the clerk and line-up of customers to legally secure it (lock box and trigger lock) for transport home?

This doesn't seem prudent- but technically that is what the law requires (as I comprehend it)....

If I obtain an ATT for the post office, I know I am receiving and transporting a restricted firearm. If I have a restricted firearm, I am required to secure it and double lock it.

Where should I do this at the post office? On the counter? In the washroom?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Tell that to the arresting officer and let us know how it went.

The point you are not getting is the law doesn't care how many packages you or your mail box gets.

It is illegal to transport a restricted without an ATT, so you need an ATT.

It is illegal for someone to be in possession of a restricted unless they are licensed and have an ATT. So whom ever picks up the package requires a license and an ATT.

I am not saying I agree with it or that it is not retarded. Just that it is the law.

So far you have provided nothing to show this is legal. Just your opinion that you get so much mail that it is impossible for you to know when the gun you ordered get here:rolleyes: Cough cough cough ... tracking number.

That's the crappy part, as the law is written you would have to trigger lock it. I have no idea how to accomplish this with out someone going all SWAT team on you.
