Hi all i was wondering about what competitive matches are avalible in alberta or who to talk to about getting started. i have a 280 remington very that is very capible of shooting 1000 yards and a 22-250 set up for out to 600 hundred yards. both guns i would like to competet with but i dont know the competitions or classes/requirements for this type of shooting. i appreciate your input.

Welcome to the F-Class of fullbore shooting - your rifles would place you in the F-Open classification. Rules can be found at the DCRA link below. In a nutshell, F-O has a 10 kg weight restriction, shot off of a bipod or pedestal, up to 8mm caliber for most ranges (I've seen a .338 Lapua used at the Northstar Range near Nokomis SK, and even though he was a big fellow, 60 rounds per day can fatigue you). F-TR has a weight limit of 8.25 kg off of a bipod, using .308 or .223 only:

Competitions are held by the Provincial Rifle Associations, and in Alberta this is the APRA. Our 900m range is the Homestead Shooting Centre, located south of the Sibbald Flats area of Kananaskis Country (west of Calgary, south of Hwy 68). We run several matches each year, plus a provincial match. Details can be found at the APRA link below. We also run 2-3 new shooter events each year and run a simplified course of fire (2 sighters plus 10 rounds for score) at 400m and 800m. We also post matches and clinics on CGN.

Shooting is pretty much over for the year - this is the time of brass prep, load testing new bullets and thinking of the first match in late April at Homestead (weather gods willing) or maybe March Madness in Sacramento (BATF gods willing).

Nice thing about F-Class is once you're hooked, you'll find matches in every province and most states. Even overseas if you're interested. I managed 25 days in competition this year, in Western Canada and the USA.

SSJ, Scout is with the APRA and he is a darned good shooter. He's also one of the guys you'll want to get to meet and show you the roes at an APRA get-together. The APRA website posts their schedules when they are known. It will be an exciting year for long distance shooting in Alberta. Stay tuned.

Move to BC we shoot weekly all but 2 times in the year. Muddy season and Hunting season. :D

But gee whiz Richard ... you folk need some ranges distances to accommodate some rifles, not just pistols!

Bill

And thanks for the kind words Ian - it's always good to see new blood coming into the sport and certainly BC has been inspirational.

We typically run 3 per year (as always, weather depending). 2x in the May/June time frame and another in October. We run you through a simulated match condition at 400m and at 800m, with 2x convertible sighters and 10 on score - the main point is to take away the stress of a match condition, but still give a person the chance to go long, with some coaching by some of the best long range shooters in Canada!

We'll announce the 2011 dates on the APRA website, as well as CGN. PM me if you have any additional questions.

F'n eh! Looking forward to seeing you out at the range. I shoot .308W in F-TR and I'm always looking for more to shoot the same!
