Hello All,

I've been reading through past threads trying to get a full picture of the state of SR in Alberta and it's a little disheartening. We have 3 larger sized Army bases and no SR community. I don't want to use this as a thread for rants so rather than dwelling on organizations and a lack of resources, let's get some constructive ideas on making SR happen in Alberta again.

I saw three big points come up in the previous threads: venue, volunteers, and participants.

Venue: I can think of Wainwright and Suffield for gallery ranges. I'm not sure of civie use but it could be a bit of a pain. Are there any others?

If we can find a proper venue, what is the way forward? A clinic, couple matches, full competition?

Participants/Volunteers: I don't think this would be an issue given the overwhelming want for SR to return to AB.

Thoughts?

I'd love to be able to shoot SR in Alberta! I'd be more than willing to volunteer, and participate. No idea who to contact to be able to use a CF range though. Run downs would be impossible at the Edson range though.

Yeah, you have to have a range with butts.... I'm going to look at two options for now and see what I get for a response. I was really hoping someone would know of another gallery style range.

:) I know exactly what ranges are available and where. ;)

I think I could describe almost every military rifle range in Western Canada by memory, down to lenght aproximate number of lanes and type of targetry, and what they are templated for. What I can't remember I can look up. Including what bases have gun clubs.

what do you really need to know.

Oh and the bases are not going to be the biggest problem ;)

getting APRA buy in.....

I think to start I would need a point of contact for a gallery range in Alberta along with the required safety personnel, equipment, etc to run a NSCC CoF. Woodchopper, if you have that info and could PM me the details, it would be much appreciated.

Why involve APRA?
From what I have read on CGN, that is a can of worms best left unopened.
Good thing about the NSCC style of matches is that the complete rule book is readily available on the DCRA website. Everything you need to know is there.

I'm not looking for any organization short of 20 dudes with service rifles shooting at some fig 11s. If the APRA wants to run a couple matches then that's cool too.

If you are going to walk into an APRA meeting to propose shooting service rifle you should put your cell phone on record first, it would have saved a lot effort if I'd done this back when the trouble started.

And wear a rain coat as it will be easier to clean all the s#!t off after.

Alright guys, I got it. Let me reiterate that this conversation has nothing to do with the APRA. I'm looking for constructive feedback on getting a SR shoot organized in the province. No politics, no bs, just a couple good dudes that want to smash a few targets.

If you want to help out in any way or know of some underutilized resources, let me know. I'll start picking away at finding a range.

Gallery ranges are rarely seen outside of the military.
The only ranges outside of the APRA 900m range that have 'butts' are, I believe, on DND property.

Typical civilian bermed ranges can be used; you will just need to modify the scoring/targets and operation of the matches, and likely the course of fire too.
