Alberta Spring Bear Hunting Areas

I will be in Cochrane Alberta in early May. I don't have too much free time.
Don't have much time to scout or to drive up north for the prime hunting areas.
Any thoughts on some trips up to 2 hours travelling from Cochrane for a bear hunt for a father and son.
Looking for crown land, again I don't have the time this year to scout out, knock and ask permission on private land.
Please understand, I know this is not the best deal but it is the only option I have this year.
Any thoughts.

Sounds like you should reschedule when you have the time to do it right. :rolleyes: Still have snow up to the Yin Yang and it isn't going anywhere, roads are going to be crappy and the area you're looking at isn't exactly overflowing with bears.

Sorry but I have other things to do out west, flights are booked, etc.
Just looking to add this side trip for a bear hunt. Can get my hands on a 4X4.
No harm in asking.

No harm in trying, but I wouldn't expect too much and certainly not without a 4x4.

Yeah this is unfortunately a bad year for early bears. Was just looking up last year's dates and I was out starting April first, managed to get a bear on the 23rd. Early May could still work out if we get some good weather, best to put on some miles and start with lower elevation cutblocks or burns that might have started to green up.

Provincial recreation areas galore (no uncased firearms). Wildlife sanctuaries and park boundaries to be aware of (hunting prohibited).

Breathtaking scenery (don't forget your camera). :cool:

In the OP's case, I think I would just drive up Hwy 40 and onto the trunk road and hunt logging cuts, creek/river valleys and pipeline right of ways.

Don't mind the haters. Drive up the Forestry Trunk Road and you are into wide open hunting territory with 40min of Cochrane. Find some long cutlines or logging blocks where you can glass and you will likely see a few bears especially at dawn and dusk. You won't have the same luck as driving 6 hours north but there is still decent bear hunting very close to Cochrane. PM me if you want some tips.

Is the Forestry Trunk road open now? I thought that it was closed during the winter and not maintained by the gov't.
I am from Ontario so I am not familiar with all the areas.
