no you don't. Completely different organization. However I think you are required to take their new shooters orienentation but i could be wrong on that.

Brooks is holding a match May 5 and July 20/21. As well Lethbridge is going to hold their double qualifier there May 12/13 because of the problems at the Lethbridge range.

Check out the Brook's website for exact details, but it is my understanding that the club matches are not (strictly speaking) IPSC matches (ie: no Black Badge appears to be required), whereas the Qualifier matches are strictly IPSC therefore BB definitely required for them.

Do I need a BB to try out IDPA?

No you don't. Requirements for attending matches varies from Club to Club and range to range, IDPA does not dictate a formal requirement. By rule clubs are allowed to have non members participate in one match prior to joining IDPA. In Canada we have a New Shooter Orientation Course available for clubs to use if they wish. The primary difference between the BB and the NSO course is each covers the rules of the sport they are attached to. The primary concern for both sports is the safety of our shooters. Since you are in Calgary contact Bruce G from the ATHL I am sure he will be more than happy to assist you. His contact information is on the IDPA Canada website under Provincial Sections.

The nice thing about IDPA is that the Black Badge (BB) course is not a prerequiste. I find the BB to be an impeadment to new shooter, especially those of us on a budget.

While IPSC and IDPA are action shooting sports, IDPA is not as fast paced. I find with IDPA that you get a great bunch of people willing to help out the new shooter. We are not worry about speed but rather completing the course of fire in a safe manner at a pace that is appropriate for your skills. Our IDPA course of fires are more prescribed and easier for the new shooter to pick up. Everyone shoots the course of fire in the same format.

The second nice thing about IDPA is that you don't have to spend a fortune on equipment. A factory issue handgun, 3 mags, a holster and mag pouch is all you really need. So depending what you shoot you should be able to get started for between $700 - $1000.

So if you are interested in IDPA check out the website myathl.com and come on out and give it a try.

At IDPA we have guys that shoot both IPSC and IDPA. Both are fine sports just different. As I look at it any trigger time is good time. Enjoy yourself go out to the range and have some fun.

Well thank you! Good to know and I like forward to coming out to give it a go!

Thanks for the info!

Nice to see there are quite a few events scheduled.
How many rounds do you guys go through usually during a typical course of fire?
Just wondering how much ammo I would require for an event like this.

Just wanted to drop a big thank you to ATHL, and everyone that made it out today for the great experience! Took a little while to thaw out afterwards, but had a fantastic time. Looking forward to the next one.

Yes it was a nice start of the season shoot in Drumheller. Coming from the norht I ran into a few snow flakes and icy road. We had a lot of new shooter out. An I beat Jim Stacey, the first time ever. So the season has to be looking up.
