I have had 5 built by Rick. The first was one much like yourself. I bought a rem 700 ltr and proceeded to have it bedded, jewell triggered, pretty much everything you can do to a factory gun. Was a very nice rifle, and so started the progression. Then proceeded to build my first full custom not even 2 months after. Ended up selling the LTR cause after I got my custom 308, the LTR just sat. That LTR was worth every penny I put into it and if I was satisfied a little easier I would probably still have it. The rifles will shoot. I went a little backwards as I bought the rifle somewhere else, and then took it to Rick. If I would have just bought one of his it would have already been bedded and such. Rick has always been fair on prices with me. I still have three of the rifles built and not because I didn't like the others, just merely can only shoot so many guns. Rick always took the time to answer my questions no matter how many times he has probably answered them before. There are a lot of other really good gunsmiths out there that make really nice rifles as well, and I will not discount their work at all. But I found ATRS kind of by fluke and my shooting has grown immensely because of it. I think the price of the rifle is a fair price due to the work that has gone into it. What you also get is a bunch of people who will do everything they can to help your shooting, and enhance the experience. Before anyone says it, hell yes I am super super biased, Rick is my friend and so are the rest of the guys at the shop, but only because of the amount of time that everyone was really willing to take to answer my questions and help my shooting. That little rem 700 will shoot if you can. Because of the work that has gone into it, it takes out all the guess work of "do I need this or that" to make the potential of this rifle better.

I don't know why he did that but I bet he heard about these experiences from a friend of a friend of a friend of a guy, who knows a guy, who is frinds with someone that had these experiences. BTW, he was also abducted by aliens...lol.
I have only been able to purchase a few small things from Rick, TPS rings, 20MOA base, bullets ect, but each of my visits weather to the old shop or the new one have been great, I was able to ask a few dumb questions, fondle a few sweet guns, and even see the 20mm Lahtti sitting on top of the Piano
I have had the pleasure of shooting a few different rifles he has built and would not hesitate to buy one when funds allow.

Not that they may want to be associated with me, but I have spent, what I consider, a sh&t whack of dough at ATRS. Service has always been good, and the prices fair. Big Ugly Man has mentioned beer, but I have yet to be offered any. What's up with that?

I've never had anything built by Rick but perhaps some day I will. I respect Rick for participating in this forum and I'm positive that he has to bite his tongue at times with certain individuals.

I would like to chime in here. I as well have only bought a few small items from ATRS, but the service I received was absolutely top notch. I have a custom build planned, and from what I can figure, I want top notch work and service. That being said, I realize that there are many quality gunsmiths in this fine country of ours, but from what I can discern, ATRS provides a very valuable service to the guy who is willing to shell out the bucks for a high end rifle. Rick, I hope your ready for me to pick your brain, cause I have a whole bunch of questions for ya!
3 years ago I got an LTR from Rick, and had it bedded, trigger job, base and rings installed. The service and the gun were great.
And the price was close to your quote as well.
For various reasons, haven't been able to shoot it much(less than 100rds), and had it for sale for a little while. I'm glad it didn't sell though.
I'm making a couple small changes to it right now(installing a different scope, surefire muzzle brake, and I really want a mag kit...) and I'll be getting a lot more use out of it this year.
This is my experience:
I bought 10 .50bmg cases from ATR a few years ago. Advertised as "once fired, lake city, sized, trimmed, ready to reload". $3.50/case plus tax/shipping. Cases came masking taped together in a plain white envelope, three of them had the case mouth crushed almost flat, they all looked like they'd been trimmed on a belt sander, primer pockets were deep enough that the primer sat around .02-.03" below flush, the cases were trimmed about .03-.07" short, 7/10 cases were stamped LS 43 and two were SA 80 and I don't remember the last one .
Maybe there was a miscommunication with what it was I ordered and to be honest, I probably should have called to straighten it out, but for the 40-something I spent, I couldn't be bothered and chalked it up to a learning experience and decided to add ATR to my list of companies I don't do business with.
I'm not implying that ATR/Rick is a bad business/guy or that ATR doesn't put out quality rifles and equipment because it's obvious that there are a lot of happy customers, I'm just not one of them. On the other hand, I bought a Versa-pod from him prior to this and it was alright and came as advertised (although I've discovered I'm not a huge fan of the versa-pod but that's a different topic and not ATR/Rick fault), so *shrugs* maybe it was just a fluke.

The internet is a two way street for dealers, gunsmiths, etc. It offers a inexpensive way to offer services to thousands of people all at once and directed to your specific market. It also offers people who for whatever reason hold a grudge or feel they have been treated unfairly by a dealer an ongoing avenue to pursue their complaints.
As dealers on this board we have all seen this. We have all made mistakes or perhaps not treated somebody as well as they deserved to be treated...we are all human. But....for any business (particularly a firearms business) that has been around for 10 years or thereabouts they will have a large client base of satisfied customers or they would not be there...period...
So as for ATRS they have been around a LONG time in a field that is tougher than most to do well in so do the math...I would say the odds of getting good product and service is extremely high....

Ross you nailed it bang on.
This business is VERY hard to stay afloat in as guys seem to be far more passionate about their guns than their cars. An awful lot of guys do not know the name of the mechanic who fixes there car, but rest assured they certainly know who is fixing their gun.
Malice I wish you HAD contacted me if you were not happy with what we supplied you, it is very hard for us to know when no-one lets us know there is a problem. PM me and I will make it right.
After talking with Rick, I have to say my opinion of ATRS is now different. In retrospect, I only wish I had of talked to him about things sooner. He IS a stand-up guy and if you have a problem, he WILL make it right. Good on you, Rick!
