Alberta to allow 22 centrefire for big game.

Hmm; 22 centerfires for big game. I’ve done more than a little off that, mosstly with 22/250 and Middlestead. I have mixed feelings to be honest. If you are the kind of guy who’s been popping gophers all summer with one, I won’t tell you that you can’t get your deer with one. There’s worse choices for sure. If they are that bad we should take a suspicious look at muzzleloaders and archery would be a non-starter. Sure they work. With a lot of trigger disipline so will a 22 LR.

On the other hand what do you possibly have to gain by pushing the limits? The carcass doesn’t grow, the meat isn’t sweeter and nobody adds 20 inches to the score. The potential for bragging rights is pretty meager, hell if you think you can do it you’re probably right. Until you’re not.

.22 centrefires are normally allowed for big game in the southern US states, where the deer are smaller and moose are not an issue.

Thats not even close to accurate. The majority of states and provinces allow 22 centerfires for big game where bottleneck cartridges are legal.

Bullets used? Twist rates?

Your post infers that they predominantly allowed only in southern states, and that it is because the deer are smaller and there aren’t moose there.

The horror...the horror.
Much ado about little. Yeah folks will use underpowered calibers. They have been doing this for quite a while now.
I gave my uncle back his father's prize deer rifle...Savage 219 in 22 Hornet.
Folks that use proven platforms will be fine. 22-250 is a hammer... use decent bullets.

The Alberta regs are starting to sound like BC's. I've said it before but the prohibition on 22's for Hunting was brought in as a Roadblock to those of lower Status and calcified from there.

The 22-250 drops Deer like they were hit by Lightning.

BC's regs on the use of Dogs.

10 year olds can hunt.

Hunted deer in North Carolina where its 6 deer to a licence, you can get as many licences as you want and the limit is 2 deer per day. Season is about 6 months long. Not sure what the two a day is about; except they seem to think it cuts down on potential waste. I can pick up a mature doe by a hind leg and hold it up with one hand like its a fish. Take a run of the mull doe and I’ve literally shot bigger coyotes. Mentionthat some of our fawns are bigger than some of their bucks, and they smile and nod because they are very polite; but I’m pretty sure they don’t believe you.
People tend to think that whatever they know is the same everywhere, they should get out if their Backyard more often.

Interesting. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says whitetail does weigh between 80-160 pounds and bucks run 100-200 pounds.

Got any grip’n grin pics with one of those tiny little devils?

I’ll see if I can find something. Another oddball thing was they had long hooves like a sitatunga from walking in swamps all the time. They didn’t see enough dry ground to wear off their toe nails and hooves were 6-7 inches long and came to points. I found it interesting and then go to wondering if sitatunga had long hooves to walk in swamps or had long hooves because they walked in swamps. Bit of a chicken and the egg thing going there. Asked a local about it and got a quizzacle look before he asked me if I was saying that deer weren’t like that everywhere because he’d never seen anything else it never occurred to him think about it.
Little things like that stick in my memory because they are weird and oddball. Maybe not Ostrich people interesting but interesting none the less.
